(AP) ? The "Sculling Sloth" is back on the water.

Hamadou Djibo Issaka, the Niger rower who was entered for the London Olympics despite only having three months of experience in the sport, was competing again Tuesday at Dorney Lake.

Issaka captivated the crowds over the weekend with show-stopping turns in the heats and the repechage of the men's single sculls, when he crawled over the line out of breath to finish nearly two minutes behind the winners.

Competing in a lower qualification race this time, he again placed last in his four-boat race and this time he was even slower, clocking 9 minutes, 7.99 seconds over 2,000 meters ? 28 seconds slower than his repechage time.

Wearing a yellow T-shirt underneath his orange-and-green Niger jersey, he was given a rousing reception as he passed the main grandstands 300 meters from the finish line.

"Give him a big cheer for plowing on," the announcer said.

Like on Sunday, he bent over as soon as he crossed the line, taking deep breaths.

"I am very happy because this is my first time at an Olympics," the 35-year-old Djibo Issaka said. "It's not easy for me to be here. I don't have any technique. I've been learning only three months. But with the time and the years, I'll get the technique."

Reporters scurried in their droves to catch a word with a man who has captured the imagination of spectators and the media alike, earning him the nicknames "Issaka the Otter" and "Hamadou The Keel" among others.

His displays on Dorney Lake have brought back memories of Eric "The Eel" Moussambani, the Equatorial Guinea swimmer who memorably splashed his way through a 100-meter freestyle heat at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Djibo Issaka lives in Niamey, the capital of Niger ? a landlocked country in west Africa that is 80 percent desert. He has two kids ? a boy and a girl. When he isn't learning to row, he earns a living gardening and working at a children's swimming pool.

He swam at a competitive level over distances of 50 and 100 meters back in Niger but turned to rowing when the Niger Swimming Federation sent him to Egypt to try it out. He received a wild card for the Olympics from the IOC Tripartite Commission, which allows each National Olympic Committee to enter up to five athletes for the Summer Games.

"Before this week, I hadn't been in a (professional) boat before. There aren't these kind of boats in Africa," he said.

Strengthened on a breakfast of chicken and beef, he took to the water Tuesday and was given a huge cheer by the packed grandstands when his name was read out before the race.

Rowing against competitors from El Salvador, Hong Kong and Peru, Djibo Issaka quickly fell behind. "It's going to be hard for the Niger athlete to come back now," remarked the announcer at the 500-meter mark.

By the time Sau Wah So of Hong Kong crossed the line to win the race, Djibo Issaka still had 300 meters left to row but the ovation he received was tremendous.

"I am very happy because they encouraged me and helped me finish. It's all about courage," he said.

It's not the last we'll see of him at the Olympics.

First, he will return on Friday for the "F'' final against Aymen Mejri of Tunisia and Paul Etia Ndoumbe, who both finished in under 8 minutes in their races Tuesday.

But his longer-term goal is to compete at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

"I'm getting ready for it," he said. "I hope to train in Niger. Maybe new boats will be there now so I will be able to do it."

Robert JR Graham.com ? The Importance of Computer Training

by:?James Copper

15233 The Importance of Computer TrainingWhether you are at the tender age of 8 or are pushing 90, computer training will make your life easier and definitely can open up a range of learning that you never thought possible. Taking part in a computer-training course is made available in all elementary schools up to special college courses that entail exceptional programs and a dizzying array of delivery formats.

Children learn computers at an alarming rate, their minds soak up the broad reaches of computers and more importantly their minds are open to the computer technology hardware and software. Some children even show an astonishing propensity for coding and programming at a very early age.

Computer training courses are in general held online, though of course, some can be accomplished through actual classroom study. Regardless of the method used, all computer-training courses start with the basics.

Basics usually begin by introducing hardware. One should learn the physical parts to a computer such as output devices, input devices, the system unit, storage devices, communication devices and finally peripheral devices.

Software is next, and should cover the elementary basics such as the differences between system software and application software. It will be important for you to learn the essential diversity between shareware, freeware, public domain software and commercial software.

You will also learn how software is introduced into a computer and the various methods that can be used and which to use depending on various situations. Also, you?ll be able to identify which system software is built into a computer and why.

Operating systems will be covered for you and how they interact with various software. The training will cover the differences between text interfaces and graphic user interfaces and what each accomplishes for the user.

You?ll learn about all the different application software that is out there, and what each does for you. Also you will learn which are considered the best software to use depending on the specific results you desire.

Finally the training course should intensely cover utilities, and what they do for a computer as well as what benefits they give the operator. You will learn all about anti-virus utilities, and disk management software.

As an adjunct to your basic computer training, good courses go one step further and teach you how to properly maintain and protect your computer so that you will not have to deal with malware, and assorted computer viruses. You also should learn the basics of computer ethics, privacy and security.

Eventually you should progress through the use of computer applications in education, such as educational research, management, as well as learning and instruction.

Once you have learned those basics, computer-training courses also teach you how to properly ?surf? the Internet, making use of the best search engines, and refining those engines in order for you to access the exact information you are seeking every time. The world of the Internet is wide open to everyone who has a computer and a connection, and it?s truly amazing what a computer can do for you!

Chevron to invest $2 billion in Congo-Angola oil field

BRAZZAVILLE (Reuters) - Chevron Corp plans to invest $2 billion to develop its Lianzi oilfield straddling the maritime border between Republic of Congo and Angola, a company official said on Sunday.

"Production from the Lianzi field will begin in 2015 and investments will cost $2 billion," Katia Mounthault-Tatu, a Chevron spokeswoman, told Reuters.

State revenues from the field, which holds proven reserves of 70 million barrels, will be split 50-50 between Congo and Angola, the two countries confirmed in an agreement on Friday.

Congo produced 105 million barrels of crude oil last year. Angola pumps around 1.8 million barrels per day.

Scientists unlock ocean CO2 secrets key to climate: study

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - From giant whirlpools to currents 1,000 km wide, scientists said on Monday they have uncovered how vast amounts of carbon are locked away in the depths of the Southern Ocean, boosting researchers ability to detect the impact of climate change.

Oceans curb the pace of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels. The Southern Ocean is the largest of these ocean carbon sinks, soaking up about 40 percent of mankind's CO2 absorbed by the seas.

But until now, researchers were unsure what mechanisms were involved because of the remoteness and sheer size of the Southern Ocean.

"By identifying the mechanisms responsible for taking carbon out of the surface layer in the ocean, we're in a much better situation to talk about how climate change might impact that process," said oceanographer Richard Matear, one of the authors of the Southern Ocean study published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The team of British and Australian scientists found that currents that take carbon from the surface to the depths occur at specific locations, not uniformly across the ocean as previously thought.

They found that a combination of winds, currents and whirlpools create conditions for carbon to be drawn down into the deep ocean to be locked away for decades to centuries. Some of the plunging currents were up to 1,000 km (600 miles) wide.

In other areas, currents return carbon to the atmosphere as part of a natural cycle.

But overall, the Southern Ocean is large net carbon sink, the authors say, calculating the area between 35 and 65 degrees south takes up the equivalent of 1.5 billion metric tons (1.65 billion tons) of CO2 a year, or more than the annual greenhouse gas emissions of Japan.

Scientists worry that a warming planet could disrupt this natural pattern by changing wind patterns and ocean currents.

Matear said by figuring how the Southern Ocean worked and using a new monitoring network of robotic ocean-going devices researchers will get a much better handle on how the seas between Australia and Antarctica are changing.

"Climate change will definitely interact with this process and modulate it," Matear, of Australia's state-funded Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, told Reuters.

Annan fears "imminent battle" in Syria's Aleppo

TAL RIFAAT, Syria (Reuters) - International mediator Kofi Annan said he feared an "imminent battle" for Syria's biggest city Aleppo.

Syrian opposition sources said helicopters from President Bashar al-Assad's military pounded a rebel-held part of the city on Saturday and armored units were positioned for an onslaught that could determine its fate.

"I am concerned about reports of the concentration of troops and heavy weapons around Aleppo, in anticipation of an imminent battle," Annan said in a statement.

"The escalation of the military build-up in Aleppo and the surrounding area is further evidence of the need for the international community to come together to persuade the parties that only a political transition, leading to a political settlement, will resolve this crisis."

But a Syrian opposition leader urged foreign allies to circumvent the divided U.N. Security Council and intervene.

"Our friends and allies will bear responsibility for what is happening in Aleppo if they do not move soon," said Abdelbasset Sida, the head of the Syrian National Council which is the main umbrella group for opposition to Assad.

"Any action has to be from outside the Security Council through an Arab League initiative and through a resolution passed by the General Assembly," he said early on Sunday on a visit to the United Arab Emirates for talks with officials.

French President Francois Hollande said he would keep trying to convince Russia and China, which have Security Council vetoes, to support harder sanctions against Assad that they have opposed during the 16-month-old uprising.

"I will once more address Russia and China so that they recognize there would be chaos and civil war if Bashar al-Assad isn't soon stopped," said Hollande.

He said the Syrian government knew it was doomed and would use force until the very end, adding: "The role of the member states of the U.N. Security Council is to step in as quickly as possible."

Russia played down speculation that it might offer Assad asylum, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saying on Saturday Moscow had no such agreement and was not even thinking about it.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition monitoring group, reported helicopter attacks on Aleppo's central Salaheddine district and fighting elsewhere in the city.

"Helicopters are participating in clashes at the entrance of Salaheddine district and bombarding it," it said.

One opposition activist said he had seen tanks and armored troop carriers heading for the district.

On the approaches to Aleppo from the north many villagers were still shopping or tending their fields. But fighters from the rebel Free Syrian Army were also in evidence.

One man in his 40s, carrying his family on a motorcycle, said he was fleeing the fighting in the city.

"We are living in a war zone," he told Reuters. "I and my relatives are just going back and forth, trying to stay away from the fighting. We left Aleppo when we saw smoke and helicopters firing."

CRUCIAL TEST

The battle for the city of 2.5 million people is seen as a crucial test for a government that has committed major military resources to holding control of its two main power centers, Aleppo in the north and the capital Damascus.

While neither side has managed to gain the upper hand, the uprising is being watched anxiously outside Syria amid fears sectarian conflict could spill over its borders. Minority Alawites have dominated through more than 40 years of Assad family rule in Syria, which has a Sunni Muslim majority.

Military experts believe that while Assad's more powerful forces will overcome the rebels in Aleppo and other major cities, it risks loss of control in the countryside because the loyalty of large sections of the army is in doubt.

Three rebel fighters were killed in clashes before dawn on Saturday in Aleppo, the Observatory said. It said 160 people were reported killed in Syria on Friday, adding to an overall death toll of around 18,000 since the uprising began.

Video footage provided by the Observatory showed smoke rising over apartment blocks in the city into a hazy sky on Saturday. The sound of sporadic gunfire could be clearly heard.

Fighting was reported in other towns across Syria: Deraa, the cradle of the revolution, Homs, the scene of some of the bloodiest combat, and Hama.

At least 10 people were killed on Saturday when security forces went into Maadameyat al-Sham near Damascus, the Observatory said.

Russia has said international support for Syrian rebels would lead to "more blood" and the government could not be expected to willingly give in to its opponents.

It has also said it would not allow searches of Russian-flagged ships under new European Union sanctions governing vessels suspected of carrying weapons to Syria.

The increase in fighting in Aleppo follows a bomb attack on July 18 that killed Assad's defense minister and three other top officials in Damascus, a development that led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

Kurdish worries drag Turkey deeper into Syria war

LONDON/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - - Turkey may be some way from acting on Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's threat to strike Kurdish separatists in Syria, but week by week it finds itself sucked ever further into its neighbor's worsening war.

The shooting down of a Turkish reconnaissance jet last month was seen by many as a turning point, prompting Ankara to join Saudi Arabia at Qatar in semi-covert support for the Free Syrian Army fighting against President Bashar al-Assad.

On Friday, Reuters revealed the existence of a secret Turkish operations centre where it worked with the two Gulf states to provide aid and weaponry to the rebels.

For most foreign powers, events in Syria's Kurdish provinces are largely seen a sideshow compared Assad's battle to survive. But Erdogan's comments on Thursday made it clear that Turkey is alarmed by worries over Kurdish PKK rebels taking advantage of the chaos.

The Turkish leader - once a friend to his Syrian counterpart who helped to rehabilitate Assad on the international stage, but now apparently an increasingly implacable foe - accused Damascus of allocating five provinces to the PKK.

Both Ankara and most Western powers view the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) as a terrorist group, blaming it for a long-running conflict that has killed some 40,000 people since it took up arms in 1984. Turkey regularly strikes PKK bases in Iraq's northern self-ruled Kurdish enclave, and Erdogan made it clear the same option was being discussed for Syria.

"We will not allow a terrorist group to establish camps in northern Syria and Turkey," he told a news conference before travelling to London for the opening of the Olympics. "If there is a step which needs to be taken against the terrorist group, we will definitely take this step."

Rising numbers of refugees crossing the border could put further pressure on Turkey. If, as many expect, Assad's forces target the partially rebel-held city of Aleppo in the coming days, numbers could soar. Turkey has already closed its borders to commercial traffic but says it will allow fleeing civilians through.

Whatever might happen on the Kurdish front, a senior Turkish official speaking on condition of anonymity said support for the rebels was set to continue - although clear caution remains.

"Naturally we are watching developments in the Kurdish region, but Ankara will not give up on its support for the whole revolution because something has happened in the Kurdish region," he said.

"We have been saying from the start, we do not think it is right to impose a regime from outside... The Syrian people must decide its own future."

The official declined to comment on what Turkey might do if the PKK established itself in the region.

CROSSING RED LINES

What Turkey is desperate to avoid is a scenario in which Kurdish parts of Syria quietly break away from the rest as the government, rooted in Assad's Alawite minority sect, slugs it out with the predominantly Sunni Muslim opposition.

"Any area which serves as a potential haven for the PKK or its affiliated groups poses a direct threat to Turkish security and Ankara's jingoistic rhetoric should be judged in this context," says Anthony Skinner, head of the Middle East practice at UK-based security consultancy Maplecroft.

"Any government which allows the PKK to set up training camps represents a red line for Ankara.... Ankara is again warning Damascus not to cross Turkey."

But if it is to take military action, Turkey's options are somewhat limited. Turkey might have the largest military in the region, but a large-scale ground incursion is seen as unlikely for now.

An airstrike on a known PKK facility - or perhaps a Syrian government post believed supporting them - seems a much more probable approach. But while air defenses over Kurdish areas are seen as a much less sophisticated than those along the coast, the loss of one Turkish jet already points to the dangers of entering Syrian airspace.

"If Turkey could prove that there was an attack coming out of Syria against Turkey, then it could launch an air strike, if it could identify a specific PKK camp in Syria," said Istanbul-based security expert Gareth Jenkins. "The problem is there would inevitably be civilian casualties because these camps would be put near civilians."

Then, there is the risk of severe retaliation. Earlier this week, Syria's government said that while it would not use chemical weapons against its own people, it might against any foreign intervention.

"Unlike with Iraq, attacks in Syria can very likely draw Turkey into a prolonged military confrontation with the Assad regime, which has a formidable military and the political will to respond," says Hayat Alvi, lecturer in Middle Eastern politics at the US Naval War College. "Syria and Turkey are both heightening the rhetoric, but it would be a huge gamble for both sides to engage in military confrontation."

Turkish leaders have long regretted the way in which northern Iraqi Kurdistan effectively seceded after the 1991 Gulf War. At worst, Turkey now fears Iraqi and Syrian Kurdish areas might try to come together to form a larger Kurdistan - an entity that might yearn for swathes of Turkish territory.

SIMPLY SABRE RATTLING?

Already, commentators in Turkish newspapers express growing concern that that is exactly what is happening. What the PKK may end up running in parts of Syria, they say, may not just be assorted training camps but a de facto Kurdish state.

The image of PKK members directing traffic and performing other civic duties, some Turks worry, could help swell its support both amongst Kurds and more broadly. At the very least, the PKK would probably have access to both new recruits and some of the weaponry made available by Syria's wider and fast-growing conflict.

"The recent developments could provide the PKK with significant military opportunities. If the government doesn't take any precautions and wastes this most precious time, Turkey will face serious security problems," Nihat Ali Ozcan, a security analyst at the Ankara-based think tank TEPAV, wrote in Hurriyet Daily News.

"The PKK wants to harvest the political opportunities these military advantages would provide, will rise up and be more aggressive about reaching its aims."

Exactly how much support Syria might be giving Kurdish separatists is far from clear, although some Syrian opposition figures accused the PKK's local partners, the PYD, of acting as enforcers for Assad.

Under both Assad and his father, Hafez, Turkish accusations of Syrian backing for the PKK were points of contention and occasionally led to threats of outright conflict.

In 1998, Turkey moved tanks to the border and explicitly threatened to send them into Syria if Damascus did not expel PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, at the time sheltering in Syria. Hafez al-Assad took the threat seriously enough to evict Ocalan - who was shortly afterwards captured in Kenya by Turkish forces and probable US support.

Some kind of at least tacit agreement from Washington might still be needed for the Turks to be willing to take action.

"The Turks have been going for a gold medal when it comes to sabre rattling," says David Lea, regional analyst for Control Risks, a consultancy firm.

"But someone - most likely the Americans - has been sitting on their tail. I don't think the Turks would do anything unless they knew the Americans were with them. They want to act, but they don't have any good options. It's a microcosm of the whole Syria situation."

Does Twitter know if you're getting a flu shot?

11 hrs.

Does Twitter influence whether you'll get a flu shot, or does it simply map the?prevalence?of flu vaccinations in your area??

That's what researchers at Penn State University are trying to figure out in a study that examines 478,000 tweets referring to the flu in late 2009, New Scientist reports. A team of students examined posts to the social network, sent out when vaccinations against the swine flu pandemic became available in the United States.?Turns out, if people in your area tweet a lot of smack against flu vaccines, it's likely that you ? or at least those around you ? aren't getting vaccinated.?

Likewise, if you're in an area where people are typing out pro-vaccination tweets, you and those around you are more likely to get vaccinations.?

Of course, researchers are mostly worried about people who aren't getting vaccinated, and hope to use such social media mapping to educate those in areas with large numbers of so-called ?vaccine resisters,? people opposed to vaccines for reasons unsupported by science ? or public health experts.

Head Penn State researcher?Marcel?Salath??told New Scientist, "If we know where people are particularly misinformed, then we know where we should do a better job at informing."

So does that make social media the cause ... or the solution? The answer seems to be both.?"Preliminary analysis shows it is very likely that negative opinions of vaccination are contagious on online social networks,"?Salath??said. His team continues to analyze the?unprecedented?data provided by social media, and work out ways to help educate the public.

Using Pets as Healing Partners ? The Ranch | Drug Rehab Eating ...

Ask any animal lover and they?ll tell you that pets can help you heal nearly any hurt. But ask a scientist and you might be surprised to receive the same answer! Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), and Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) have gained some attention from researchers due to the positive (or is that ?pawsitive?) outcomes reported. While it may seem intuitive to pet owners that pets can help you ?feel better? just how could a pet assist in recovery?

Some definitions

Not every pet program is the same. AAT is a very specific type of therapy with goals and measurement of progress at its core. This is no casual "pet the puppy" plan, but a highly specific treatment approach in which human service professionals set specific goals for the client and the use of the animal is designed to help the client reach that goal. Goals are objective and measurable ? for instance a child with fine motor coordination problems might participate in AAT activities in which the child practices specific fine motor skills such as fastening a leash onto a collar or opening a treat container, and progress in developing grip and coordination are measured.

Animal assisted activities are much less formal and structured. Goals are not set beyond the most basic goal of enhancing whatever healing or progress is being worked toward by having an animal present. This is more of a ?pet and enjoy? type program, in which clients have supervised but unstructured contact with the therapy animals.

Benefits of contact with animals

Physical health benefits of AAA are well documented. Petting a friendly animal (it appears to not matter very much what type of animal is used as long as it is friendly ? some programs boast certified chickens and llamas on their roster!) has been shown to:

  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Reduce heart rate
  • Decrease reported anxiety
  • Elevate mood
  • Increase beta-endorphin levels
  • Decrease reported feelings of tension or stress
  • Stabilize mood
  • Improve anger management
  • Raise self esteem
  • Improve frustration tolerance

Therapy animals have been employed by substance abuse programs, at risk teen programs, and in prisons. They are used in schools to help with reading problems (studies show that reading to an animal lowers self consciousness, improves confidence, and increases enjoyment ? hence little Johnny is more willing to try to read!), and in nursing homes to provide comfort and enjoyment to residents. Equine therapy (hippotherapy) has been used in substance abuse settings as well.

?

How does it work?

There are a number of different models for use of therapy animals in substance abuse or mental health settings. In out patient settings, a certified therapy animal would schedule visits to the treatment center and time with the therapy pet would be scheduled into the day?s activities. These visits are typically up to 15 minutes with an individual client and clients are visited one at a time. The therapy animal and handler would get regular breaks for water, rest, and pitstops outside. In an inpatient setting, the animals may actually live at the rehab and are cared for by the rehab staff as well as clients. Cats are often managed in this way, where clients may practice responsibility by caring for the animals, and gain solace and unconditional acceptance from time spent with them.

In early recovery, emotions can be overwhelming, and the wordless love and acceptance that an animal can emanate can help to open the floodgates and allow for a safe emotional release. In addition, therapy animals can be grounding to people in recovery, as they provide a role model for setting priorities: food, water, shelter, medical care etc. Caring for an animal can help clients learn to care for themselves.

A few safety tips

Before getting involved with AAT or AAA at a treatment center, make sure to check on a few key safety issues. Only use animal and handler teams that have been certified and maintain their certification. This ensures that the animals are trained and have passed temperament testing to make sure they are well suited to therapy work. This also ensures that handlers are aware of best practices in AAT/AAA and groom animals prior to visits, trains their animals to behave appropriately, and know how to manage their animals to prevent fatigue or stress to any involved ? animal or human.

In addition, screen participants prior to setting up the program to make sure that clients with allergies or prior bad experiences have been accommodated and kept safe. Not all clients are ready for close contact with animals: be sure to discuss exactly what the therapy situation might be like before allowing any clients to interact with any animals.

That said, most pet programs are very successful and for many clients, a memorable and profoundly positive part of treatment. For some, pets become an important aspect of sober living and an integral part of relapse prevention: caring for an animal becomes an anchor in the on-going process of recovery.

A University of Sheffield academic is helping a team of citizen scientists to carry out crucial research into European genetic heritage.

Citizen Scientists are not required to have a scientific background or training, but instead they possess a passion for the subject and are increasingly being empowered by the scientific community to get involved in research.

Dr Andy Grierson, from the University of Sheffield's Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), has helped a team of citizen scientists from Europe and North America to identify vital new clues to tell the story of Europe's genetic history.

Dr Grierson explained: "Understanding European history since man first arrived on the continent is a huge challenge for archaeologists and historians.

"One way that scientists can help is by studying the genetics of European men. All men carry a Y chromosome that they inherit from their father, which has been passed down the generations from father to son for thousands of years. So most men in Europe will share common ancestry at some point in the past, and we are able to investigate this shared ancestry using genetic studies of the Y chromosome.

"However, up until recently, there have not been many genetic clues on the Y chromosome to allow scientists to be certain about identifying different populations."

The team has addressed this problem by downloading human genome data obtained by the 1000 Genomes Project from the Sanger Centre in Cambridge. Then, working on their home computers, they managed to extract 200 novel genetic variants from Y chromosomes of the most numerous group of western European men.

By determining the patterns of these markers in each of the 1000 Genomes Project samples, the team was able to draw up a new family tree for the majority of men in Western Europe.

The group hopes that this resource will allow a much more detailed analysis of migration and expansion of populations in Europe. For example, some of the new genetic markers may help to study the origins and movements of different historical and cultural groups such as the Celts.

Dr Grierson added: "This community-led approach to genetic research could easily be adopted by other research areas. In particular, the 1000 Genomes Project has made the whole genome sequence of more than 2,000 individuals freely available for research purposes. These sequences potentially contain new information that will give important insight in diverse disciplines such as clinical medicine and evolutionary biology.

"One problem is that the amount of data analysis involved is huge, so working in partnership with citizen scientists allows us to move forward far more rapidly. There are thousands of science graduates, who for one reason or another have pursued non-scientific careers. Getting involved in citizen science projects is one way that these people can re-engage with research. Likewise many people with careers in IT and computing already have the sorts of skills required for analysing whole genome sequences in projects like ours."

Richard Rocca from Saddle Brook in New Jersey, USA, a community scientist involved in the project, said: "By searching through vital records such as birth certificates, many of us can trace our ancestry back several generations. The task is very time consuming, especially for those, like me, whose ancestors left Europe many generations ago. As gratifying as the results may be, once the paper trail ends, we are left to wonder about our deep ancestry. By working together, we were able to add many levels of detail to the genetic tree. I have no doubt that this new information will help some of us trace our individual ancestries back into pre-history."

Greg Magoon, from Manchester in Connecticut, USA, another community scientist involved in the project said, "It's a very exciting time for this field. The development and use of new genome sequencing technologies over the last few years along with the public availability of data obtained with these technologies, particularly from initiatives like the 1000 Genomes Project, are enabling us to make rapid progress in our understanding of historical human migrations and paternal lineages. We've tried to show how such progress can be facilitated by an engaged community of individuals, with varied and complementary skills, connected via the Internet."
