Ancient water found in Canadian mine

Water drilled from rock in a North American mine is among the oldest yet found on Earth, say scientists.

Novel dating techniques used by the Canadian and UK team suggest the fluid is at least 1.5 billion years old.

The water was probably once on the surface and then percolated through the ground where it became trapped at a depth of 2.4km.

The discovery, made under Timmins, Ontario, is reported in this week's edition of the journal Nature.

Although far from any light source, particular types of micro-organism could survive in the water - it has the right chemistry; it is rich in dissolved gases like hydrogen and methane.

The team is currently testing its samples to determine whether any such lifeforms are indeed present.

"There are similar waters in South Africa with almost identical chemistry that are tens of millions of years old, and they contain microbes that have adapted to that environment," explained Prof Chris Ballentine from Manchester University.

"These are microbes that can survive on the energy from the natural water-rock interactions," he told BBC News.

A positive identification had fascinating implications for our understanding of how life evolved on the early Earth and where it could exist underground today on other planets, such as Mars, Prof Ballentine added.

Xenon marker

The water was recovered from deeply buried sulphide ores containing zinc and copper.

The researchers collected the water as mineworkers drilled new exploratory holes.

Temperature increases with depth and so the fluid emerged at 40-50C.

Three dating techniques were employed to work out how long the water trapped in the rock had been isolated.

A key method involved studying the different types, or isotopes, of xenon dissolved in the fluid.

The noble gas can be used as a marker to time when the fluid was last in contact with the atmosphere at the Earth's surface.

This approach only produces a broad age range, so the best the team can say is that the Timmins water had been resident underground for between 1.5 billion and 2.6 billion years. Even so, this is still hundreds of millions of years older than samples recovered from deep under South Africa's Witwatersrand Basin.

The only water known to be more ancient is found in minute quantities trapped in the voids in some rock minerals. These inclusions can be billions of years old.

Hidden reservoirs

Members of the research group at Toronto University are now examining the Timmins samples for their biological content.

Identifying microbes would go to the heart of issues about the habitability of deep Earth environments and for the prospects of finding life on other worlds.

Mars, for example, is cold and dry at its surface today, but the evidence suggests it was much warmer and wetter billions of years ago.

A lot of that early water was lost to space, but some of it is thought to have retreated to deep reservoirs.

Findings like those at Timmins raise the possibility that similar, long-isolated environments could yet persist on Mars, possibly supporting micro-organisms.

"The study has consequences for our understanding of how early life on Earth may have migrated into these kinds of environments and been protected from cataclysmic events at the surface," said Prof Ballentine.

"And being completely speculative, on somewhere like Mars, where the surface may have been habitable in its early history, water could have percolated into deep environments and been preserved on planetary timescales."

Iran expects 'progress' in U.N. nuclear talks, West skeptical

By Fredrik Dahl

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran expects progress will be made in talks this week with the United Nations' atomic agency, Tehran's nuclear envoy said on Monday, but Western diplomats held out little hope of an end to the deadlock.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been trying for more than a year to coax Iran into letting it resume a stalled investigation into suspected atomic bomb research by Tehran, which denies any aims to make nuclear weapons.

Wednesday's talks in Vienna will be the 10th round of negotiations between the two sides since early 2012, so far without an agreement that would give the IAEA the access to sites, officials and documents it says it needs for its inquiry.

"We have the meeting with the expectation of progress of course," Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's ambassador to the IAEA, told Reuters. "We are serious in these talks."

But a Western diplomat, also based in the Austrian capital, said he saw "no reason at all for optimism" in view of a series of failed meetings in the last 17 months. Other envoys also said they did not expect any breakthrough.

In May one year ago, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said after visiting Tehran that he expected to sign a deal with Iran soon to unblock the inquiry, but that hope was later dashed.

Western officials accuse Iran of stonewalling the IAEA, and of seeking to restrict the ability of U.N. inspectors to carry out their investigation the way they want.

Iran says the demands for access go beyond its obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and that the allegations against it are based on forged intelligence.

IAEA WANTS BASE ACCESS

The IAEA-Iran talks are separate from, but still closely linked to, broader diplomatic negotiations between Tehran and six world powers aimed at resolving the decade-old dispute peacefully and prevent a new Middle East war.

Israel and the United States have warned of possible military action against Iran if diplomacy and sanctions fail to make it curb its nuclear program.

Tehran says the program is a purely peaceful project to generate electricity and that it is Israel, widely believed to hold the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, that threatens peace and stability in the region.

Iran and the six powers - the United States, France, Germany, Britain, Russia and China - failed to break the diplomatic impasse in their last meeting, held in early April in Kazakhstan.

Also on Wednesday, negotiators from the European Union and Iran will meet in Istanbul to discuss these diplomatic efforts, although analysts do not expect any substantive negotiations before Iran's presidential election on June 14.

Some diplomats say Iran is merely using the talks with the IAEA for leverage in the separate negotiations with world powers which, unlike the IAEA, have the power to ease sanctions that are hurting its oil-dependent economy.

The IAEA's immediate priority is to visit the Parchin military base. It suspects explosives tests relevant to nuclear weapons may have taken place there, perhaps a decade ago, and then been concealed. Tehran denies the accusation.

Iran says it must first agree with the IAEA on how the investigation should be carried out before allowing such access.

"Nothing will happen until this framework is negotiated and agreed upon," Soltanieh said.

Washington State system hacked, data of thousands at risk

SEATTLE (Reuters) - The website for the Washington State court system has been hacked and up to 160,000 Social Security numbers and a million driver's license numbers may have been accessed, officials said on Thursday.

The disclosure, which follows a number of major hacking incidents in recent years that have targeted a range of companies from Twitter to Apple, raises concerns that the information accessed could be used to commit financial fraud.

The breach was discovered in February, and officials at first believed no confidential information was leaked even though a large amount of data was downloaded from the website, the Washington State Administrative Office of the Courts said.

But officials later determined that 94 Social Security numbers were definitely obtained by the person or group that committed the security breach, while 160,000 Social Security numbers and a million driver's license numbers may have been accessed.

"We regret that this breach has occurred and we have taken immediate action to enhance the security of these sites," the state's court administrator, Callie T. Dietz, said in a statement.

Officials were notifying by mail the 94 people whose Social Security numbers were accessed from the site, court officials said in the statement.

The people whose names and Social Security numbers might be at risk are those who were booked into a city or county jail in the state from September 2011 to December 2012, officials said.

The breach could also have exposed the driver's license numbers of people charged in the state's superior court criminal system between 2011 and 2012, the statement said.

Anyone who received a driving under the influence citation from 1989 to 2011 or had a traffic case filed or resolved in a district or municipal court between 2011 and 2012 might also be at risk, officials said.

No financial data such as credit card numbers was maintained on the court website, so officials said there was no risk of that information being accessed directly through the breach.

The breach was the latest in a series of hacks. In one prominent case, Cody Kretsinger of LulzSec, an offshoot of hacking group Anonymous, last year pleaded guilty in federal court in Los Angeles to taking part in a computer breach of Sony Pictures Entertainment that prosecutors say caused over $600,000 in damages. Last month, he was sentenced in California to a year in prison.

Etihad and Air France unveil codeshare flights | Buying Business ...

Etihad Airways and Air France have announced new codeshare destinations in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe for this summer.

The move follows last October?s strategic agreement between the two carriers to foster closer commercial ties, build an expanded global network and increase travel options for customers.

Etihad will now placing its EY flight code on Air France flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Oslo and Stockholm. It will also build on the existing joint codeshare routes from Paris CDG to Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Madrid, Nice and Toulouse.

Subject to further regulatory approvals, Etihad hopes to soon place its EY code on Air France flights from Paris CDG to Lisbon and Marseilles. The carrier also flies twice daily between Abu Dhabi and Paris.

Air France is placing its AF code on Etihad?s daily flights from Abu Dhabi to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, and to two cities in Australia ? Melbourne and Sydney. The French airline expects to be able to place its AF code shortly on Etihad services between Singapore and Brisbane.

Again subject to regulatory approvals, Air France intends to place its AF code on routes between Abu Dhabi and Kathmandu.

The carrier already places its AF code on Etihad?s operated flights between Paris-CDG and Abu Dhabi, and onwards to Colombo, Mah? in the Seychelles and Male in the Maldives.

Dominique Patry, vice president international affairs and alliances at Air France, said: ?Our strategic partnership with Etihad Airways continues to flourish and, as a result of the expansion of codeshare services, our travellers now have enhanced access to Abu Dhabi and to key cities in Africa, Australia Asia and Europe."

Kevin Knight, chief strategy and planning officer at Etihad Airways, added: ?Enhancing connectivity, making the journey easier and more enjoyable, increasing choice, and seamlessly integrating operations over each airline?s respective hub, continues to underpin our strategy for building a world-class global network.?

New Android apps worth downloading: Loss of the Night, Spin Alarm Clock, Triple Town update

Amateur astronomers and those interested in contributing to science should check out today?s top new app, Loss of the Night. The app measures light pollution and lets users contribute scientific data to a greater study. Following that is Spin Alarm Clock, an app that requires you to physically stand up and spin around in order to turn off the alarm. Finally Triple Town, a strategic match-3 game, was updated with a new gameplay mode.

Best Educational Apps, Handpicked By Experts

Appolicious is pleased to introduce appoLearning.com, where parents, teachers and students find great education apps. Check out our introduction video here!

What?s it about? Loss of the Night is for studying light pollution in your area, measuring the amount of light being emitted into the nighttime sky, and taking part in a global light pollution study.

What?s cool? Astronomers and stargazers unite with Loss of the Night, an app that?s ostensibly part of a global effort to measure the effects of light pollution in various areas. Light pollution, or excess light emitted into the night sky, often by inefficient streetlamps, is being studied by scientists in a number of fields and might have a big effect on things such as health and sleep ? as well as on the ability of astronomers to study the night sky. Loss of the Night takes measurements that users make of light pollution and feeds them into a larger research project. It also allows students and amateur astronomers to gather information about their own areas that they can use in studies of their own.

Who?s it for? If astronomy and science interest you (or if you?re a student or a teacher), check out Loss of the Night.

What?s it like? Both Sky Map and Star Chart are useful apps for learning about the night sky and doing some amateur astronomy.

What?s it about? Spin Alarm Clock makes sure you?re awake in the morning. It issues a loud and irritating sound, and it only lets you shut it down by standing up and spinning around three times. Talk about a morning workout!

What?s cool? Lots of people use their smartphones to help them wake up in the morning, but for many of us, an alarm you can just switch off with a button or a swipe isn?t quite powerful enough to get the job done. Spin Alarm Clock, on the other hand, seriously forces you to wake up, because it can?t be deactivated unless you?re definitely awake. In fact, Spin Alarm Clock requires you stand up and spin around with your device in-hand in order to deactivate it. The app includes options, such as a snooze button, and lets you set the number of times you need to spin around in order to deactivate it, if you need additional prompting to wake up. Spin Alarm Clock also supports voice assist.

Who?s it for? Anyone who has trouble waking up in the morning should give Spin Alarm Clock a try ? if they can handle it.

What?s it like? For more tough-to-beat alarms, try Math Alarm Clock and Alarm Clock Xtreme.

What?s it about? Puzzler Triple Town requires players to make smart matches to build towns and rake in high scores.

What?s cool? Unlike other match-3 titles, Triple Town doesn?t just require players to make matches of three like objects to clear them from a grid. Instead, each match of three objects creates a single, better object. The goal then becomes to carefully place objects in the right places on the grid to create new, better matches as you slowly earn more and more high-level items. You?ll also have to contend with bears, who show up to wreak havoc on your growing town and disrupt your matches. Triple Town?s newest update adds a new ?Spring? theme and a new game mode.

Who?s it for? If you like match-3 games, you?ll enjoy Triple Town?s aim at strategy and challenge.

What?s it like? Check out 10000000 and Dungeon Raid for a pair of match-3 title that require a little more in the way of strategy.

HTC expects revenues to jump 636 percent in Q2 2013, will continue to support Windows Phone

HTC's financial results released today don't contain much good news -- take a quick look at the unaudited figures we reported last month. But despite its worst ever quarterly profit earlier this year, it's banking on a substantial turnaround over the next few months. During an earnings call today referencing its audited results, HTC said that its outlook for Q2 2013 includes a revenue jump to around $2.4 billion -- a huge increase from $1.45 billion registered in Q1. HTC CEO Peter Chou said that the company was fine "in terms of cash flow," and that it would continue to support both Android and Windows Phone hardware in the near future. How about those recent supply woes? "We are working as hard as possible to meet the demand everywhere." The company, however, wasn't giving away any handset sales figures, something that the competition does enjoy flourishing.

When asked whether he was concerned with its recent hardware being copied, Chou was frank: " In this industry, everything can be copied. I think there's no point [in] thinking you can prevent this... but whether they would get this original quality -- I think the most important [thing] is that you are first."
