The Enumclaw boys golf team is looking for another strong season with sights set on each match and postseason.

Coach Bob Kilmer said although the team lost some seniors, including one of the best in the state, Tyler Salsbury, the prospects for this season look good.

Kilmer said he has a "young but very talented group."

Seniors Junior Condon and Beau Brock should bring in some very strong rounds. Junior players expected to have solid seasons are Ian Runland, Kolton Tinney and Tom Hudon.

Last year the Hornets finished second in the South Puget Sound League 3A, but had won the league for nine consecutive years.

It will be no surprise to see the Hornets return to the top of the league with this team.

Enumclaw is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. tee time Sept. 11 against Lakes aat Oakbrook Country Club.

The first home match is 2:45 p.m. Sept. 13 against Auburn Mountainview.

Rav Belsky on Opponents of Metzitzah B'Peh - Yeshiva World News

In an interview in this week?s Ami Magazine, Rav Yisrael Belsky, rosh yeshivah of Torah Vodaas had sharp words for the opponents of metzitzah b?peh, including Dr. Tom Frieden, formerly health commissioner of New York City and now head of the Centers for Disease Control.

??Where do these people come in and tell mohalim what to do? They don?t have any understanding of this field. I spoke to Dr. Tom Frieden, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and went through the statistics. The statistics don?t show that there is any problem. But he doesn?t understand this.

?I asked Frieden if it?s true that 80 percent of mohalim have antibodies for herpes and 80 percent of them do metzitzah b?peh. He said yes. I said, ?According to your statistics, there should be at least 500 cases of herpes. How come there isn?t even one [aside from a previously documented case]? It shows that your statistics are flawed!? The theories are not developed. They don?t prove anything. So Frieden changed the topic and started talking about something else. He had no response.?

For the rest of the interview, including Rav Belsky?s view on Mayor Bloomberg?s role in the actions against metzitzah b?peh and his suggestions for community involvement, as well as interviews with Romi Cohn, Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Rabbi Moshe Duvid Niederman, and many others, pick up this week?s Ami Magazine.

Morning Bell: Top 3 Small Business Struggles

Small businesses are getting a lot of focus from politicians, because they are a key engine of job creation?which has stalled in the U.S. economy. A Republican National Convention theme of ?We Built It? continued the political debate over the economy yesterday.

A survey by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in July revealed that small businesses? top three concerns were taxes, regulations, and poor sales. A quick look at these top three small business struggles shows they have every reason to be demoralized.

1. Taxes

Small businesses are under enormous threats from looming tax hikes. President Obama is advocating a tax hike on the country?s job creators?the at least 1.2 million small businesses that employ workers and make more than $200,000. ?Known as flow-through businesses, these entrepreneurs pay their taxes through the individual income tax. A study by Ernst & Young estimates that this tax hike would kill about 710,000 jobs and cause real wages to drop.

This tax hike, however, is just a portion of the Taxmageddon crisis scheduled to hit the country on January 1. The Congressional Budget Office has left little doubt that unless Congress and the President prevent Taxmageddon, the country is headed toward a fresh recession next year.

And Taxmageddon includes only some of Obamacare?s 18 new tax hikes, several of which don?t kick in until 2014 or later. The tax landscape is truly bleak.

2. Regulations

Heritage?s James Gattuso and Diane Katz have documented the sea of new regulations that continue to drown America?s businesses. In their detailed report, ?Red Tape Rising,? they note: ?During the first three years of the Obama Administration, 106 new major federal regulations added more than $46 billion per year in new costs for Americans. Hundreds more regulations are winding through the rulemaking pipeline as a consequence of the Dodd?Frank financial-regulation law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and the Environmental Protection Agency?s global warming crusade, threatening to further weaken an anemic economy and job creation.?

The cost of these regulations strangles economic growth and job creation.

3. Poor Sales

In an economy with 8.3 percent unemployment, consumers have to cut back. Struggling sales are no mystery. Higher fuel prices are also hurting small businesses, which must make the no-win decision of passing these costs on to consumers or absorbing the costs themselves.

Heritage?s Nick Loris explains the impact of fuel costs on the economy : ?In a recent poll by the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council, 40 percent of small businesses responding said they have had to increase their prices. But that approach has a distinct downside. When consumer demand is already down, passing higher costs on to consumers suppresses demand even further, causing lower output, lower income and higher unemployment.?

To all of this, President Obama has said, ?We tried our plan?and it worked.?

It?s not working for small business owners or for nearly 13 million jobless Americans.

Congress and the President need to stop Taxmageddon, open access to our energy resources, and reduce regulations that cost more than the benefits they deliver. America needs jobs, and small businesses need relief.

Quick Hits:

  • ?Hurricane Isaac knocked out power, flooded Gulf-front roads and pushed water over the top of an 18-mile section of a rural Louisiana levee before dawn Wednesday,? reports CBS/AP.
  • Iran has called on the Non-Aligned Movement, at a summit going on now, to open a war tribunal against Israel.
  • AAA is forecasting the highest gas prices of any Labor Day weekend in history, Bloomberg reports.
  • In a new report, a former deputy prime minister of Russia estimates that ?the maintenance of President Vladimir Putin?s residences, jets and cars alone? costs Russian taxpayers $2.5 billion a year.
  • Who wins in the new auto fuel efficiency standards, announced by the Obama Administration yesterday? Certainly not drivers, explains Heritage?s Nick Loris.

Gov't nods to planned university hospitals

?TK |

30 August 2012

Prague, Aug 29 (CTK) - The Czech government Wednesday approved the concept of the bill under which teaching hospitals would change their status and turn into university hospitals, a source close to the cabinet meeting told CTK.

The university hospitals are to be nonprofit, their privatisation would not be possible, and politicians would not influence their management, Health Minister Leos Heger (TOP 09) has proposed.

Under the university hospital bill that is to take effect in 2014, the director will be elected by an administrative board comprising representatives of the university, the region and the state. The supervisory board will have members representing the state, the university and the hospital staff.

The bill wants university hospitals to be controlled in a managerial way, namely that their heads would be clearly responsible for their financial operation.

Unlike in the past, the state would not subsidise the indebted hospitals and it would not bear the responsibility for unpaid debts.

A hospital will receive the university status once it signs an agreement with a medical faculty that has an accredited study programme.

A university hospital would be allowed to use the payments from health insurance companies only to cover the costs of health care services, including its modernisation and salaries of its staff. The costs of the practical lessons for medical students would be covered by the university.

The bill on university hospitals was originally prepared by former health minister Tomas Julinek (Civic Democrats, ODS) who wanted to make them joint-stock companies. Critics of the plan argued that this was a path towards the privatisation of teaching hospitals.

Nine teaching hospitals operate in the Czech Republic. The Health Ministry directly controls also three other hospitals, all seated in Prague.

Democrats to stress Obama national security record

(AP) ? Democrats plan to emphasize President Barack Obama's record on national security and veterans on the night he delivers his address at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

An Obama campaign official says the party will discuss Obama's handling of national security issues and his work with veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan on Sept. 6, the final night of the convention. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement was pending.

The night will include a speech by Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the party's 2004 presidential nominee and a veteran of the Vietnam War. Kerry is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Obama will deliver his address at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium.

Marco Rubio: GOP Has Immigration 'Challenge' ? Peace and Freedom

By George?Stephanopoulos?|?ABC OTUS News

Florida Sen.?Marco Rubio?told me this morning that he agreed with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who said Tuesday that?you can?t just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate.?

Villaraigosa was referring to the number of prominent Hispanic Republicans slated to speak at the?Republican National Conventionthis week, but Rubio said the mayor?s message applies to both parties.

?I think what he?s saying, quite frankly, is true for both parties,? said Rubio,?who spoke to me this morning on ?Good Morning America.? ?Policies matter and, look, the Republican Party does have a challenge. We can?t just be the anti-illegal?immigration?party, we have to be the pro-legal immigration party.

?We have a broken system of immigration that needs to be fixed and we have a legal immigration problem because we have millions of people who are in this country without documents and we have to deal with that in a way that honors our legacy both as a nation of compassion and a nation of immigrants but also as a nation of laws. That?s a real challenge. That?s not an easy thing to do. We?re going to confront that not by pandering, not by making unrealistic promises but by trying to find a balanced approach to how to deal with it.?

Recent polls show that?Mitt Romney, the GOP nominee for president,?is struggling with Latino voters. Hispanics are a growing minority in the United States and a key demographic in Rubio?s home state of Florida, a crucial swing state in the presidential election. Romney has expressed views on immigration seen as being to the right of former?President George W. Bush?- who was for comprehensive?immigration reform?- while President Obama, who has much higher support among Latino voters, issued an executive order earlier this year that would?allow some undocumented immigrants legal status.

Rubio told me this morning that Romney would replace this policy.

?I think he?s going to replace it. That?s what I think you can expect from the Romney presidency and I think the obligation of some of us in the Congress is to find that permanent solution,? Rubio, 41, said. ?It was something I was working on, that I continue to work on, an alternative to the DREAM Act that allows us to continue to deal with that issue but not in a way that?s amnesty and not in a way that encourages illegal immigration in the future.?

Rubio, who is Cuban-American, is among several?Hispanic Republicans?who?have prominent roles?at the Republican National Convention this week. Rubio will introduce Romney Thursday night on the final night of the convention in Tampa, Fla., before the former Massachusetts governor formally accepts the GOP nomination for president.

?I hope to present to the people of the United States in the few minutes that I have, two things. A very unique human being, Mitt Romney, who has lived his life in a way that?s not just admirable but really a role model, irrespective of how people may feel about his policies, they may disagree with him on policies, but you look at the way he?s lived his life as a husband, as a father, as a member of his community, really a role model for younger Americans and what we should all aspire for our kids to be,? Rubio said.

?And then, also, the choice that America has between two very different views of government?s role in our economy. That?s really what this election is about. It?s not just a choice between a Democrat and a Republican, it?s a choice between two very different futures. I hope I can do that for him.?

Eight dead in Quebec Legionnaires' outbreak

(Reuters) - Canadian health officials say eight people have died in a rare outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the province of Quebec, having identified more than 100 cases of the dangerous strain of pneumonia since July.

Aiming to stop the outbreak, public health workers have inspected and disinfected about 89 cooling towers in Quebec City, the provincial government said in a release on Sunday. All told, 104 cases have been identified so far.

Legionnaires' disease is caused by bacteria that can grow in cooling towers, showers and other water sources. It mostly affects people already in poor health, spreading as they inhale small droplets of contaminated water suspended in the air.

The illness, named for a 1976 outbreak at an American Legion convention in Philadelphia, is rare in Canada, with only about 75 cases reported each year, according to a fact sheet from the federal public health agency.

An Overview Of Cricket Accessories

By: SteffiCurdy

Cricket gear includes bat, ball, gloves for batting and wicket keeping, protective gear, stump, bails etc. Its not an easy task to buy these accessories you must be careful in choosing these. Compare the rate with other shops before you proceed to buy. There are stores which supplies cheap quality product for higher rates. Ask your friends or neighbors suggestion to know about the prices and quality of the products.
The main thing which attracts others in cricket is batting. People feel happy seeing a batsman in full flow. Some make choices by seeing the grains on the cricket bat. There are 5 to 20 grains present on the bat. More number of grains are present when the sunlight, water, quality of the soil is good and also depends on how old is the tree. Less grain indicate that the tree is not so old. A new bat should be oiled to prevent it from crack or split of bat. Avoid over oiling of bat also. This oil also makes the bat to function better. The bat is made of willow wood. The wood or blade is connected to the cylindrical handle which is surrounded by a rubber grip.
The next important equipment is the cricket ball. The weight of a cricket ball is considered to be155.9-163.0 grams and its circumference is 8 13/16-9 inches. The bowling can even change the game. There are two color ball used white and red. White color is used during the one day and twenty20 matches because these balls are getting dirtied soon and they are not perfect balls for pitching. But the red balls are very stable so it is used during the test matches as it takes 5 days to get over. Not only the ball decides the game but also the bowling technique adapted by the bowler plays a major role.
Stumps are the next important accessories included. These stumps are three vertical post placed to support the bails. These stumps are called off, middle and leg stump. Off stump are present on the off side of the wicket, middle at the center or in between the other two stumps and leg stump are present on the leg side of the wicket. There are spikes present at one end of the stump which makes the stump inserted into the ground. The other end is curved or rounded to support the bails on it.
Helmet is a protective head gear that must be worn by all the players to protect themselves from getting injured. The ball comes in full force that it could even hurt the player standing on the opposite side. Before the helmets were designed only to cover the head region. But covering only the head region was not sufficient because the balls can even hurt the face. So later the helmets were designed in a way that it even covers the face region to an extent.
You must wear a perfect outfit made of good quality that is soft in nature. Wearing a perfect T-shirt, trousers, gloves, socks are very important. To make more stylish wristband and caps are worn. Buy the outfits in a proper store without compromising on the quality.
Keeping in mind all the necessary equipments and accessories it is important to buy it in a perfect store. You could also do online shopping to find the best quality products.

'2016: Obama's America' ? Will political documentary sway undecided voters? (+video)

'2016: Obama's America,' which is being screened at Tampa hotels hosting Republican National Convention-goers, is already the top grossing non-nature documentary of the year.?

August may be the laziest month for Hollywood blockbusters, but it has become open season?for little-films-that-can. And this year is no exception, with the political documentary ?2016: Obama?s America,? pulling in more than $9 million to become the top grossing non-nature documentary of the year.

The film, from conservative author Dinesh D?Souza, which began playing in theaters nationwide this past weekend and has gone viral online, is a slow ? and selective ? trip through Obama?s backstory. It?leads viewers to the narrator?s conclusion that the president?s goals are to realize his Kenyan father?s anti-imperialist dreams.

The documentary is currently screening in Tampa hotels hosting guests at the Republican National Convention, where its themes have been warmly embraced.

But the real question is, at this late date, will such a film make a difference in an election that by most accounts will be determined by a razor-thin margin of voters who have yet to make up their minds?

The film most likely will not sway many independent voters directly, says David Mark, editor in chief of Politix, an online and mobile site for citizen?s input, and author of ?Going Dirty: the Art of Negative Campaigning.? But, says Mr. Mark, a former senior editor of POLITICO, where the film might have an impact is in the nitty-gritty of an election.

?It could energize the base into all the kinds of things that can turn out voters, like walking the precinct, manning phone banks, and all the kinds of volunteer stuff that juices up supporters,? he points out.

Soon-to-be Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be the most likely to benefit, adds Mark, who says the film has been a hot topic on conservative talk radio, where hosts have been urging supporters to go see the film. ?Everyone likes to say they don?t want negative campaigning and movies like this, but the truth is that the reason we continue to have it is because it works,? he says, adding, ?negativity gets people to participate.?

The surprise success of the film suggests it is part of a ?new normal? in US politics, says John Johannes, a professor of political science at Villanova University in Philadelphia.

Filmmaker Michael Moore ?probably should be credited (or blamed) with advancing this type of political advertising, an effort to add a veneer of respectability and authority to coat anti-candidate politics,? Professor Johannes says via e-mail. This type of politicking is more likely to appeal to those already committed for or against Obama, he notes, adding that he would be surprised if this movie changed any minds.

?It is, however, yet another indicator of what is happening to American politics,? he says: ?Trying to pin down candidates for their backgrounds more than their policies; a focus on personalities more than issues; and a play to anger and fear rather than to thoughtfulness and judgment.?

But some say this film suggests otherwise ? that this election may actually hinge on more than negativity, says journalist John Graves, editor of The Retirement Journal and author of ?The 7% Solution.?

Mr. Graves says he and his wife went to the film over the weekend.

?The film itself was instructive for its view from outside the inner workings of the US politic,? he says via e-mail, adding that it was valuable to witness what he dubs ?the raw exploitation of power by a man who knows himself and his destiny very well.? Beyond that, he says, ?if the issues as described in the film are also descriptive of the ?whole piece? landscape, it will be a metaphysical election (one guided by principles).?

The film?s power may also be a harbinger of things to come, points out April Masini, online advice expert at askapril.com.

She says a large part of the audience will be already-decided Republican voters, those ?who want verification that they're doing the right thing, and something to talk about among themselves.? But the valuable audience, she points out, will be those undecided voters who can make or break a popular vote in a close race.

But she adds, ?The anti-Obama documentary will also be a measure of how important films and documentaries are to swinging a vote in the age of fast technology like Twitter, e-mail and tabloid news. If this documentary is perceived as being effective, buckle up for more politicians in Hollywood.??

Investors are buying up Sirius XM Radio Inc stock ahead of a potential share buyback, but some analysts and investors say it would be wiser to hold off on purchasing shares until it is clear how Liberty Media plans to operate the satellite radio company.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> rose 100.51 points, or 0.77 percent, to end at 13,157.97 on Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> added 9.05 points, or 0.65 percent, to 1,411.13. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> gained 16.39 points, or 0.54 percent, to close at 3,069.79.

A six-week string of gains in the S&P 500 <.spx> ended on Friday amid shifting expectations for central bank stimulus. This week could bring clarity on that issue, and that could determine whether the recent rally that took the index to four-year highs will persist.

Pussy Riot says two members flee Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two members of Russia's anti-Kremlin punk band Pussy Riot have fled the country to avoid prosecution for staging a protest against President Vladimir Putin at a church altar, the band said on Sunday.

A Moscow court sentenced three members of the all-female opposition band to two years in prison on August 17 for staging a "punk prayer" at the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February and calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin.

The sentence drew sharp international criticism of the Russian government, while opposition groups at home have portrayed it as part of a Kremlin clampdown on dissent.

Police said earlier this week they were searching for other members of the band.

"In regard to the pursuit, two of our members have successfully fled the country! They are recruiting foreign feminists to prepare new actions!," a Twitter account called Pussy Riot Group said.

Defence lawyers of the convicted Pussy Riot members - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich - are expected to appeal against their sentences next week.

Tolokonnikova's husband, Pyotr Verzilov, told Reuters on Sunday that the two members of the group who have fled Russia had taken part in the cathedral protest along with his wife.

"Since the Moscow police said they are searching for them, they will keep a low profile for now. They are in a safe place beyond the reach of the Russian police," he said by phone.

Asked if that meant a country which had no extradition agreement with Russia, Verzilov said: "Yes, that suggests that."

"But you must remember that 12 or even 14 members who are still in Russia actively participate in the band's work now, it's a big collective," he added.

The Kremlin has dismissed criticism by Western governments and prominent musicians including Madonna and Sting as politically motivated.

Putin, back at the Kremlin since May for his third presidential term, said before the three band members were sentenced that they should not be judged too harshly.

Under Russian law the three Pussy Riot members put on trial could have faced as much as seven years' jail for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, but the prosecutors asked for three years and they were sentenced to two.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Player 58, pockets everywhere brace for impact

We hope you wear baggy pants, because you're going to want big pockets to carry Samsung's giant new jukebox. The Galaxy Player 5.8 is dominated by its namesake 5.8-inch, 960 x 540 LCD -- a screen that makes the 4.8-inch AMOLED on the closely related Galaxy S III look downright modest by comparison. Android 4.0 and the latest generation of TouchWiz make their first appearances in a Samsung media player here, with the spin naturally on books and movies instead of the tasks you'd associate with a smartphone. You're otherwise looking at the kind of media player you'd expect in 2012: there's either 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot, a front VGA camera for those face-to-face sessions and a huge 2,500mAh battery to compensate for the display. We're still waiting on a few details, such as the exact processor and the Galaxy Player 5.8's launch schedule, although the announcement's timing suggests we may get a peek at this behemoth when IFA 2012 kicks off later this week. In the meantime, we'd advise against buying a pair of skinny jeans.

Obama-Romney race is focused on 7 states

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? On the eve of their national party conventions, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are locked in a close race to amass the requisite 270 Electoral College votes for victory. And the contest is exactly where it was at the start of the long, volatile summer: focused on seven states that are up for grabs.

Neither candidate has a significant advantage in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia, which offer a combined 85 electoral votes, according to an Associated Press analysis of public and private polls, spending on television advertising and numerous interviews with Republican and Democratic strategists in battleground states.

The analysis, which also took into account the strength of a candidate's on-the-ground organization and travel schedules, found that if the election were held today, Obama would have 19 states and the District of Columbia, offering 247 votes, solidly in his column or leaning his way, while Republican Romney would have 24 states with 206 votes.

Obama won all seven of the too-close-to-call states in 2008, and they are where the race will primarily be contested in the homestretch to the Nov. 6 election.

Ten weeks before Election Day, the AP analysis isn't meant to be predictive but rather is intended to provide a snapshot of a race that's been stubbornly close all year.

Among the unknowns that could shake up the electoral landscape before November: the latest unemployment figures that come out early next month, an unexpected foreign policy crisis in Syria or Iran and the outcome of the candidates' October debates.

Both sides are working to persuade the 23 percent of registered voters who said in an Associated Press-GfK poll that they are either undecided about the presidential race or iffy in their support for a candidate.

To woo them, the campaigns and political parties, along with allied groups with access to unlimited financial contributions, have already spent an astounding $540 million on television advertising, according to ad spending reports provided to the AP. And there's more to come.

Over the past three months, the campaign took a sharply negative turn, at times becoming nasty and personal.

Obama sought to define Romney early as a ruthless corporate raider for his time at the head of a private equity firm in Boston, and as an out-of-touch rich man keeping secrets about his wealth. Romney, in turn, worked to cast Obama as a failed president on a host of fronts, primarily the economy.

Both candidates have hit road bumps: Obama saw the unemployment rate rise to 8.3 percent and gave Republicans an opening to argue that he was unfriendly to small business. Romney had a widely panned foreign trip and made a series of potentially problematic comments, most recently joking about the debunked conspiracy theory regarding Obama's citizenship.

The national party conventions, starting with Republicans here, who convene Monday and start with a full schedule on Tuesday, and ending with Democrats the following week in Charlotte, N.C., will set the parameters of the fall campaign, and could provide each side with at least a temporary surge of support in national, if not battleground state, polls.

While Obama has a clear advantage given his incumbency, Romney does have a path to victory ? though it's a steep climb.

He must win most of the seven most competitive states ? Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia ? in order to reach the magic number. For instance, he can lose Ohio's 18 electoral votes and still become president if he wins the other six and hangs onto those already in his grasp. It's difficult to see a scenario where Romney wins without a victory in Florida, which offers 29 electoral votes.

Neither side expects a dramatically different playing field this fall.

"You know the states that are in play," said Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina. "I don't think there's going to be a surprise."

Romney's political director Rich Beeson makes the same point: "I don't think you're going to see the map go crazy."

Still, once their conventions are over, both campaigns will commission polls in the hardest-fought states to determine whether to shift their strategies. The candidates and their allied outside groups will pull money and manpower from states that are moving out of reach while relocating it to others they may now think they have a shot at winning.

"We're in a holding pattern," said Charlie Black, a veteran Republican campaign strategist and informal adviser to Romney.

Perhaps not for long.

With a huge cash advantage, Romney is considering trying to put more states in play ? and creating more state-by-state paths to reach 270. He's closely watching to see whether it's worth it to compete aggressively in Wisconsin, now that native son Rep. Paul Ryan is on the ticket.

The Republican National Committee and GOP allies have been advertising in the state in hopes of making it competitive; at least one poll shows they've had some success and the race appears close. Obama, who has a formidable campaign on the ground that includes the state's active labor and minority blocs, hasn't advertised there but might be forced to do so.

Romney also is eyeing a deeper investment in Michigan, where he campaigned Friday, and Pennsylvania, where Ryan was last week. Obama carried both states in 2008, but the GOP sees promise in the economically struggling northern industrial states, especially among working-class, white voters.

The Republican may have the money to expand the map.

August financial reports show that Romney's overall fundraising apparatus ? his campaign, the RNC and a separate joint-fundraising committee ? had roughly $177 million in the bank at the end of July. The reports are the most recent public data.

And to a greater degree than Obama, Romney also has amassed an untapped stockpile of general election money that he plans to use this fall. He can begin spending it immediately upon accepting the nomination for president at the convention's close Thursday night.

Obama and his comparable committees, in turn, had only about $127 million on hand, according to the most recent report.

He also must wait until he accepts his party's nomination on Sept. 6, the close of the Democratic convention, to start spending his general election money.

Unlike Romney, Obama isn't focused on expanding the map in earnest.

He's mostly looking to hang onto as many of the states he won four years ago, with Ohio being of particular focus. In recent months, Obama's standing there has strengthened, the unemployment rate has dropped and last week General Motors announced a $200 million expansion of a northeast Ohio plant to continue building the Chevrolet Cruze there.

Beyond playing defense, Obama's team is watching to see whether the political terrain becomes more favorable to him in Missouri in the aftermath of controversial abortion and rape comments by Rep. Todd Akin, a GOP Senate candidate.

The backlash has been fierce, and polls show Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill ? arguably the most vulnerable Senate Democrat ? having gained ground. Obama competed for Missouri four years ago but lost and hasn't run ads there this year. Romney has had a comfortable advantage there.

If they have the money to do it, both sides will engage in head-faking: spending money in places simply to force the other side to defend their home turf. For example, if Romney goes after Pennsylvania, which has voted Democratic in all recent presidential elections, Obama would likely have to spend money to defend it, limiting the amount of cash he'll have available to spend in more competitive states, like Florida or Virginia.

Samsung wins split decision on Apple patents

Banned in Seoul: Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4. Photo: PhoneArena.com

FORTUNE -- In a ruling that will not affect the U.S. patent infringement trial now in the hands of a California jury but addresses many of the same issues, a South Korean court has delivered a split decision that slightly favors Samsung.

A three-judge panel ruled Friday that...

    • Apple (AAPL) infringed two of Samsung's standards-essential patents for the transfer of mobile data
    • Samsung violated Apple's "bounce-back" touchscreen feature
    • That Apple's claims that Samsung copied the design of its onscreen icons were without merit
    • That there was "no possibility" consumers could confuse Samsung's smartphones for Apple's

The South Korean patent dispute was one of dozens Apple and Samsung are fighting in courts around the world -- this one on Samsung's home turf.

Each side was ordered to pay the other damages. Apple must pay Samsung?40 million won ($35,300). Samsung was ordered to pay Apple 25 million won ($22,000).

The court also halted sales of each side's older product lines. Pending appeal, Apple must stop selling the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2 in South Korea, while Samsung must stop selling 12 products including the Galaxy S, Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab.

The iPhone 4S and the Galaxy S III were spared because they were introduced after the suits were filed.

The penalty Apple was ordered to pay for two of Samsung's wireless patents is particularly significant, writes FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller, because the two patents are "standards essential" and by international agreement must be licensed under so-called fair and nondiscriminatory (FRAND) terms.

With this ruling, according to Mueller, South Korea may have inadvertently declared itself a "FRAND rogue state."

"What appears at first sight to be a mixed ruling," he writes,?"is actually a declaration of a trade war. It would mean that foreign companies would either have to bow to Samsung's and LG's demands and, among other things, give up their own non-standard-essential intellectual property or stop selling in Korea."

Rodgers Shines, Cardinals Crash: Recapping The Highs And Lows From Thursday's NFL Action

Thursday's NFL action was filled with highs and lows. Which teams stood out and which ones struggled?

Aug 24, 2012 - The NFL preseason is nearing an end, thankfully. Week 3 got under way Thursday night with a trio of games that included the NFC favorite Packers, a Ravens team that suddenly looks like the AFC favorite, an upstart Bengals team and a Cardinals team that appears in serious decline.

At times preseason football can leave you feeling a bit like the blue-suited hipster pitching the NFL to whatever audience will listen. Maybe the NFL's ad agency sent along this red-bearded stranger to give the world something worse than preseason football. What other reason would explain his existence?

    Ginger1_medium

So what did Thursday's games tell us about the season ahead?

(Almost) Nothing To Worry About In Green Bay

Aaron Rodgers burning cornerbacks is nothing new. Watching him do it with his legs was a little unusual. Rodgers ran the ball six times for 52 yards and two touchdowns. He picked up more rushing yardage than anyone else in that game, including Cedric Benson who returned to Cincinnati in a Packers uniform.

Pass protection could have been better for the Packers quarterback. A few of his scrambles happened because the Bengals' front four obliterated the pocket while he was standing in it. This was still his best game of the preseason, completing 12-of-22 passes with one pick and his scrambling totals.

    Aaron_medium

    Yep, still got the belt.

Mediocre preseason numbers aside, the Packers have nothing to worry about with Rodgers, unless he gets hurt and they have to turn to Graham Harrell. On Thursday, Harrell was 5-for-12 and 26 yards. It was at least a better outing than last week's, but Green Bay needs to find a better option behind Rodgers.

    Arizona Is In Trouble

Pick your poison in Arizona. John Skelton entered Thursday's game against the Titans as the top quarterback, a nose ahead of Kevin Kolb in the ugliest position battle in the NFL. Both signal callers were, as the scouts might say, terrible.

Kolb and Skelton combined for three interceptions on throws that defied logic. Skelton finished early with a woeful 4-for-10 line with 41 yards and a pick. Kolb did a little better thanks to a switch on the offensive line that allowed him to finally make a connection with Larry Fitzgerald. Still, Kolb's two picks were head scratchers, and neither did anything to lay a claim to the starting job.

    Kolbface_medium

Part of the problem is Arizona's offensive line, an offensive line in name only. Both Kolb and Skelton were sacked on their first plays of the game. The Cardinals gave up a total of four sacks, which seems remarkably low. There was a brief respite in the second quarter when the Cardinals moved D'Anthony Batiste to the left side, replacing D.J. Young who started in place of Levi Brown. That's when Kolb had enough time to link up with Fitzgerald.

Word on the street is that Arizona will try to find another stopgap quarterback to replace their stopgap quarterbacks as teams start trimming rosters. It may not matter. No quarterback should be asked to work under those conditions. Considering that the Cardinals play the 49ers and Seahawks twice this season, and a capable Rams pass rush, they look like the early favorites for the top pick in the draft.

    A Good Day For Receivers

Kendall Wright, the Titans' first-round pick this year, impressed me with his play last night. He led his team with 44 yards on four catches, beating Patrick Peterson on a quick slant for a 10-yard touchdown. The Baylor product and Jake Locker, who was also solid on Thursday night, ought to combine for plenty of highlight-reel plays this season.

Baltimore needs Torrey Smith to emerge as a top receiver, and Thursday's results would suggest that the second-year player is well on his way. Smith caught eight passes for 103 yards, as the Ravens used the first half to practice their passing section of their playbook. The Ravens will obviously lean heavily on Ray Rice when the season starts, but with Smith and Flacco synced up, they can finally stretch the field and give their offense another dimension for teams to contend with. It's hard not to pick the Ravens for the AFC favorites this season.

Another first-round pick continued his run of strong preseason play. Jaguars rookie Justin Blackmon finished the night with four catches for 72 yards. He is quickly becoming Blaine Gabbert's top target, and could be the key to a better Jaguars team this year.

    Cincinnati Struggles

The Bengals' success last season left everyone wondering whether they could take a step forward in 2012 after a very good haul of prospects in the draft and another year of experience for top-tier players like Andy Dalton and A.J. Green. We took a look at that question Thursday morning.

Dalton and Green never established a connection against the Packers. The quarterback threw the ball six times to his top receiver, but Green caught just one pass. Dalton's throws struggled to find their target, as Cincy Jungle noted:

They subsequently fell apart. Andy Dalton floated a pass to Green into the end zone that should have been picked off with Williams having superior position. Cedric Peerman lost two yards on the following play and the drive ended on a quarterback sack. They were forced to kick a field goal in the second quarter.

It is the preseason, so it could just be a matter of Jay Gruden dialing his troops in rather than trying to sort out position battles and get players in game shape. With Brian Leonard as their top running back, the Bengals offense was a one-dimensional group anyway.

    Maurice Jones Who?

Jim Irsay's tweeting sent the media scrambling to asses trade rumors, which naturally left some wondering about holdout Maurice Jones-Drew. Last year's rushing leader is still not on the train, and he might miss it given how well Rashad Jennings is playing this month.

Jennings carried the ball 13 times for 57 yards on Thursday, an average of almost 4.4 yards per carry. Through three preseason games working in MJD's spot, Jennings has 4.86 yards per carry with 175 yards on 36 carries. Jacksonville probably needs MJD this season more than they need an extra draft pick in 2013, but if the situation does not get resolved the combination of Jennings and an improved passing game could still keep the Jaguars on the path back to respectability.

Who else caught your eye on Thursday, for good or bad reasons?

Mobile app turns smartphones into ?virtual radios? for first responders

In an emergency, every second counts, and communication between various emergency services and government agencies can be of critical importance. While proven to be effective, current systems such as Land Mobile Radio (LMR) can still leave gaps in the lines of communications. However, a new mobile app developed by U.S. defense contractor and industrial corporation Raytheon aims to close some of those gaps by enabling first responders to communicate without LMR. The app is part of the company's Interoperability Communications Suite which aims to enhance interoperability between LMR radios, landline, VoIP phones, and P25 systems via ISSI, and 4G/LTE.

Rather than replace existing communications tools, Raytheon?s software is designed to complement the traditional methods used to facilitate communication between government agencies and emergency workers.

?These devices essentially become ?virtual radios? with the new application and greatly reduce communications gaps for first responders,? said TJ Kennedy, director of Public Safety and Security for Raytheon?s Network Centric Systems. ?It also allows personnel to reach back to their home network from anywhere in the world that they have PC, tablet or smartphone access.?

Raytheon's app allows the user to establish direct voice communications with architects, building engineers and other knowledgeable people who could provide valuable real-time information, without those people being required to access the public safety radio network via LMR?an improvement which could potentially make the difference between life and death.

The app enables a commander to monitor and communicate to a responding unit through his or her PC or mobile device, even when the commander is out of range of the LMR coverage. When commanders are within coverage, the app can still prove useful as it allows less important chatter to take place without using up valuable communications channels.

Raytheon hasn't yet clarified exactly with which devices its mobile app will be compatible, but the company's choice of words seems to indicate a desire to support multiple popular devices.
