Free NFL Sunday ticket with Madden 25 for tabs,pc & phones

Posted Yesterday, 10:20 PM

Will my running back still fall down every time theres a slight breeze? And will collisions and tackles still look awkward and made up?

If not, I'm not interested.

You don't like 20 guy pile ups every time a player falls and then tries to get up?

In another moment, down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

Qld authorities on hunt for oil spill ship

AUTHORITIES are testing oil samples from three ships to find the vessel responsible for a spill at the Port of Brisbane.

Crews are still working to clean up the 1.4km slick from Sunday night.

So far five birds have been found covered in oil and wildlife officers are searching for any others.

Maritime Safety Queensland has taken samples of the spilt oil and is comparing them with samples taken from three ships that were in the area at the time.

Investigators are also looking at CCTV footage.

The oil is now being recovered by a skimmer vessel.

"When this is completed the focus will turn to cleaning oil from piles and fenders along the wharf," Transport Minister Scott Emerson said.

USPTO Rejects Apple's Pinch to Zoom Patent

I got $5 that says Apple appeals this ruling by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Thanks to ir0nw0lf for the heads up.

The 21 claims of the patent were rejected by the USPTO in a "final office action," as they were anticipated by previous patents or unpatentable. Known as the "pinch-to-zoom" patent, it covers the ability to distinguish between the scrolling movement of one finger and two-fingers gestures like pinch-to-zoom on a touch-screen to activate certain functions.

Rugby Union: Crusaders coach unhappy with errors

Todd Blackadder has blamed the Crusaders' inability to take their chances for their failure to qualify for the Super Rugby final.

Crusaders coach unhappy with errors

The men from Christchurch went down 20-19 to the Chiefs in Saturday's semi-final clash, with second-half tries from Lelia Masaga and Aaron Cruden eventually proving the difference.
It now means the previously dominant Crusaders haven't won the Super Rugby title for five seasons and questions are being raised over whether or not Blackadder is the right man to lead the side in 2014.
The former All Black captain was understandably upset about his team's defeat in Hamilton and believes they only have themselves to blame after spurning a number of chances.
"I'm probably disappointed that we didn't play with the width and the dominance in the areas that we would have liked," he said. "It comes down to those critical decision-making errors on the field.
"It comes down to key moments. Probably the difference is that the Chiefs took their two (try-scoring) opportunities and we didn't quite nail ours."

Chaka Khan Boycotts Florida, Talks Hometown Celebration And Ending Chicago's Gun Violence

Following a brief hiatus last month for vocal rest, Chaka Khan has fully resumed her performance obligations and is set to appear in her hometown of Chicago this weekend in honor of the unveiling of her very own street, Chaka Khan Way.

The commemorative celebration adds to list of events honoring the 60-year-old?s 40th anniversary of her illustrious entertainment career, which includes the release of her highly anticipated opus, ?The iKhan Project.?

The Huffington Post caught up with the funk/R&B powerhouse as she discussed her celebratory homecoming, in addition to her stance on boycotting Florida?s Stand Your Ground law, and stopping gun violence in Chicago.

How does it feel to have your very own street named after you?

I feel like, now I?ve finally made it [Laughs], It?s a big thing. Especially for a city like Chicago wanting to name a street after me. I think it?s really, really special to me.

Early last month you were on hiatus due to vocal rest. How are you currently feeling?

It was just my voice. My voice doctor had said that I was working too much. He said, 'just take a rest for a minute.' So I did. And I?m so much better?we started to book my gigs with a little more compassion. I?m not working three or four nights in a row anymore.

What?s the latest status of your new album, ?The iKhan Project??

We?re just about finished. I have to go in and redo some vocals. That?s about it. It won?t be long. And it?s so good. It?s worth the wait.

Last year you recorded a musical tribute in memory of Trayvon Martin. What are your thoughts on the controversy surrounding George Zimmerman?s trial and race relations in America?

Well the trial, number one was a travesty. Racism is still very much alive and well in this country. It has gone to more of a cerebral state. But it?s alive and well. The new slavery is keeping black men in jail.

Are you planning on participating in any additional tributes or projects in honor of Trayvon?

Well I am boycotting Florida. I had a booking there last week and I cancelled it. But if any tribute comes up I?ll do it. Absolutely.

In addition to the trial making headlines, your hometown of Chicago is also in the news for its recent string of gun violence. What?s your assessment on the situation?

It?s insane. These kids are using gangs as a rite of passage. If we were still living in villages it would be very different. But it?s like a pseudo rite of passage, which is very sad. As a matter of fact I?m going to be over at Jesse Jackson?s place on Saturday morning. We?re having a rally addressing the violence in Chicago.

How would you compare Chicago?s youth today to your experience growing up in the city?

Well, these kids have nothing else to do. I remember growing up there when we had after school community centers. I think that would be a big help. The sad thing is that this is America. In all of America these kids have nothing to do after school, if they go to school. And if they don?t, I can?t really blame them. The school system sucks. So there?s a lot of work that needs to be done. And I plan on being hands on with it.

Everyone should be of service in some way. There?s a reason for being here. We?re here fundamentally on this planet right now to be of assistance to one another. And it doesn?t matter whether you help a lot of people or one person. I?m lucky that I can affect many people at one time as opposed to someone who works in the bank.

Chaka Khan?s new album, ?The iKhan Project,? is slated to hit stores and digital retailers later this year.

NFL's Jonathan Vilma tackles the bar scene with startup

Jonathan Vilma wants you to buy a drink ? from your smartphone. The New Orleans Saints linebacker is a partner in BarEye, a mobile startup that produces software for bar owners and their patrons.

BarEye began with a pilot program in Tallahassee, Florida, but is about to expand into the Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami markets (where Vilma himself is a bar owner).

The idea is that via the free to download Android and iOS BarEye app, customers can "check in" at participating bars and buy real drinks for themselves or, say, the attractive stranger across the room. In that way the BarEye app might serve as an icebreaker. No cash is exchanged when you order the drinks, since the user sets up an account ahead of time, kind of a running tab from the phone. You can tip through the app as well. And bar owner can offer specialty drink promotions through the app.

CEO Andrew Bennett, a co-founder of BarEye with Vilma and another executive, says that over the past year of testing in Tallahassee, BarEye signed up 17 bars. The app was downloaded 10,000 times and more than 6,000 drinks were purchased. "Bars recognize the ever-growing need to embrace varied social networks as a means to increase their audience, engage their consumers and stay relevant," Bennett says.

In trying to make a go at the business, the partners are pursuing a franchise model with would-be franchisees paying $2500 for exclusive access to a selected geographical area. Franchisees are meant to sell the BarEye platform to local watering holes and to troubleshoot any eventual problems. Revenues from the drinks purchased through the app are split between the franchisee, the bar and BarEye.

A screenshot of the app Bareye.(Photo: Bareye)

Though Vilma says he has discussed BarEye with friends around the league, he doesn't believe the celebrity status he brings as an NFL player will have much to do with BarEye's success or failure. "I feel like this product is so good, if we do it right and have the right infrastructure in place, it doesn't need star power or celebrity power."

The linebacker was suspended last season as part of the Saints' "Bountygate" scandal, a suspension that was subsequently "vacated." But while Vilma told USA TODAY that he wouldn't characterize the suspension as a "blessing in disguise," he did use his time away from the game "to understand my other ventures."

Meanwhile, Vilma says his experience as an NFL player is helping him in business. "The NFL is very structured (and) personally I like it that way. It's all about performance ? you either perform or you don't. In football you get fired or cut. In (business) you lose your money. Clearly I'm not trying to lose money."

With the return of training camp, Vilma is again tackling his day job, which he says takes about 95% of his time. But Vilma says he'll devote time to BarEye during football off days, and once the season is over, will "dive right back in."

EA's biggest retail partner last quarter was Apple

EA's biggest retail partner last quarter was Apple

Apple has historically never been a company terribly concerned with gaming. That all changed, however, when the App Store was launched and iOS, in the blink of an eye, became one of the more popular gaming platforms in the world.

Highlighting the increasing importance of the iOS platform to gaming, EA executive Frank Gibeau recently said in an interview with VentureBeat that EA generated more revenue via Apple in the last three months than it did with any other partner.

The quarter was a bit of an anomaly because we didn't put out any blockbuster console titles, but our biggest retail partner, measured by dollar volume, in Q1 was not Best Buy or GameStop. It was Apple.

EA CEO Peter Moore said during EA's conference call that this marked the first time Apple "was EA's biggest retail partner as measured by sales."

Some of the more popular EA titles which helped contribute to EA's overall bottom line included The Simpsons: Tapped Out, The Sims Freeplay, and Real Racing 3 which has been downloaded over 45 million times since first launching this past March.

All told, EA generated US$90 million from smartphone and tablet titles, but the company refused to break down what percentage of that $90 million was attributable to iOS.

Official: Man fatally stabs 2 gov't staff in China

In this July 23, 2013 photo, Chinese security personnel try to subdue a knife-wielding man outside the family planning office in Dongxing city in southwest China's Guangxi province. Local media report that the man attacked the local family planning office killing two officials and injuring another four after being refused a residency permit for his fourth child that he fathered in violation of China's one-child policy. (AP Photo) CHINA OUT

(AP) ? A man who was told by officials they couldn't register his fourth child because he didn't pay a penalty for breaking China's family planning laws stabbed to death two government workers and injured four others, state media and an official said.

Footage of police trying to subdue the man outside a family planning office in southern China's Guangxi region while he still brandished a machete was widely available on Chinese news websites and shared on social media Wednesday.

The incident this week is one of a string of grievances against symbols of authority in China that have turned violent in recent months. It also illustrates how disliked China's family planning limits are, more than 30 years after their introduction limited most urban couples to one child and rural families to two.

Many comments on China's Twitter-like sites voiced sympathy for the man and their opposition to the one-child policy, with some calling on the government to get rid of it.

A family planning official said Wednesday that a man and a woman at the office died in the attack and four other workers were injured, including a woman who had her right hand cut off. The official from the Family Planning Commission of Fangchenggang city said the suspect was certified mentally disabled. As is common with Chinese officials, she gave only her surname, Li.

Footage broadcast on Guangxi TV showed police wearing helmets using long metal bars to bring a man with a machete resisting them under control. Authorities said the suspect had been detained.

According to the official Xinhua News Agency, staff in the Dongxing City Family Planning Bureau ? which comes under Fangchenggang city ? refused Monday to register the man's fourth child for a hukou, or resident's certificate, because he hadn't paid a social compensation fee.

The fee is a fine levied on parents who break family planning laws and can be up to 10 times a family's annual income, depending on the province and the whim of the local planning bureau. A child without a hukou faces a multitude of problems because the certificate is needed to register for education, health care and government benefits.

Tuesday's Xinhua report, which cited an initial investigation by the Dongxing municipal government, identified the man as having the surname He.

On Tuesday morning, He is believed to have broken into the building and attacked the six victims, Xinhua said, adding that the man is a villager and has one son and three daughters. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had previously paid a social compensation fee.

Although often known as the "one-child policy," China's family planning laws allow families in rural areas to have a second child if their first is a girl.

China has seen a number of recent cases in which people who have been unable to find redress for their grievances have turned to violence to attract attention. Though many commentators on Chinese blogs and media have condemned the use of violence, there has also been an outpouring of sympathy for these individuals, who are seen as having been failed by authorities.

On Saturday, a motorcycle taxi driver detonated a homemade bomb at Beijing's main airport after eight years of frustration trying to seek redress for an attack by city guards that left him paralyzed and in debt, according to his brother.

Last month, a man aged about 60 reportedly chronicled online his unsuccessful efforts to get a local police station to correct his age so he could be eligible for social security payments, then a day later set fire to a crowded commuter bus, killing 47 people.

West Frankfort Car Show Benefits Coach Kill Cancer Fund

WEST FRANKFORT -- A new car show is bringing in some pretty cool vehicles and a lot of charitable help for folks battling cancer. The cars were part of the Kroger Amateur Car Show held in West Frankfort on Sunday. The event benefits the Coach Kill Cancer Fund.

Former SIU football coach Jerry Kill was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2005. He started the fund to help needy families and individuals battling cancer and childhood diseases. It's the first year organizers held the car show, and they say they're happy with the turnout.

"We decided to have a car show this year. At this point we have about 65 cars entered. For our first year that's a great number," says Andrew McRoy with the Coach Kill Cancer Fund. "I was hoping for 30. We've doubled that so that's awesome."

The cars in Sunday's show competed for prizes and recognition. Organizers plan to do the show again next year and hope it will become one of the charity's biggest fundraisers.

Texas tourists share photos of close encounter with cougar

Two hikers who came face to face with a cougar last week near Lake Louise are sharing their photos of the elusive predator.

Bob and Joyce McMillan were visiting the area from their home in Abilene, Texas.

?He was magnificent, but it was too close for comfort,? Joyce McMillan wrote in an email to the Herald.

They were hiking on the Tea House Trail last Tuesday morning. Joyce said they realized later that the cougar had been following them from the start.

?We realized that in retrospect,? she said. ?Some crows were going crazy and kept up their constant squawking.?

She told her husband to turn around and see what the crows were doing in the trees above them and that?s when he spotted the cat.

?We kept an eye on him,? she said.

They met a group of three from Michigan on the trail and they hiked together and made sure to make lots of noise.

The cougar soon slinked off into the woods.

?At the time, it was both amazing and terrifying,? she said. ?Just glad those hikers were there.?

Their sighting plus an incident by the lake shoreline prompted a warning from park officials.

Last Monday, officials received a report of a cougar following a horse and carriage along the Lake Louise shoreline. The cougar followed for about five minutes before heading into the trees.

?It?s not unusual for cougars to use that area,? said Parks Canada spokesman Omar McDadi.

He said the fact it followed two groups was cause for concern.

As a result, a warning was posted in and around the Lake Louise shoreline trail, Lake Agnes trail, Fairview Lookout trail and the Plain of Six Glaciers trail.

Kerry Washington's Wedding Was 'Simple and Sweet'

07/21/2013 at 06:00 PM EDT

Olivia Pope may thrive in complicated situations, but Kerry Washington likes to keep it simple.

That's according to a source, who attended the Scandal star's top-secret wedding to San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, 32, last month in Idaho.

"Everything was held at one of Kerry's friend's houses," the source tells PEOPLE. "They flew a few people out on this little private plane. The house was beautiful."

As for the ceremony, which took place outdoors on the property, "It was small, just family and close friends," says the attendee. "They said their own vows, people stayed at the house. It was really simple and sweet."

And though Washington, 36, has rocked some bold red carpet looks, on her big day she opted for minimalist chic. "The dress was plain white, slim-fitting, like it could have been off a rack," says the source. "It was really regular."

Perhaps less is more for the Emmy nominee: "I'm blessed," Washington told PEOPLE just after learning of her nomination for Scandal. "I'm really happy in all areas of my life."

Kirk Cameron: Actor Uses Faith-Based Community on Social Media to Get Facebook and YouTube to Remove Block on 'Unstoppable' Trailer (VIDEO)

Cameron took to Facebook to protest the blocking of his trailer from social media, including Facebook.(Photo : Facebook)

Kirk Cameron, perhaps best known for his role as Mike Seaver on the hit show "Growing Pains," posted a plea on his Facebook?page after the social media network blocked him from posting links to his new movie, "Unstoppable," according to Deadline.

"Calling all friends of Faith, Family, and Freedom!" Cameron posted. "Facebook has officially "blocked" me and you (and everyone else!) from posting any link to my new movie at UnstoppableTheMovieDOTcom, labeling the content as 'abusive,' 'unsafe,' and 'spammy!'

"This is my most personal film about faith, hope, and love, and about why God allows bad things to happen to good people," the post continued.

Cameron then encouraged Facebook users to help him get the link allowed. YouTube also blocked the link. After Cameron posted his request, more than 250,000 fans shared the post, resulting in a reversal of the decision from both Facebook and later, YouTube.

The trailer includes images of people running from a masked man holding a rock over his head, giving the appearance he might be trying to hit someone with it. Cameron described the film as dealing with why bad things happen to good people.

"People tried to stop 'Unstoppable' on Facebook, and because millions of us joined together as one voice, Facebook has apologized and welcomed us back!" Cameron posted after Facebook restored the trailer. "You all just demonstrated to the press...that the communities of faith, hope, and love are, well...unstoppable."

When YouTube didn't lift the ban right away, Cameron posted another plea.

"Now can you all talk to YouTube??" he posted. "They have blocked and labeled the 'Unstoppable' trailer as 'spam,' 'scam,' and 'deceptive!'

YouTube then also complied, though the company hasn't commented on the trailer.

"Because of your firm, loving, and clear voice, not only did Facebook welcome us back, YouTube also removed its block on our Unstoppable movie trailer," Cameron posted. "My phone is ringing off the hook to talk with me about how powerful the faith community is to accomplish good things when we put our hearts and minds together."

"Unstoppable" is a one-night, live event that's set to occur at 8 p.m. EST on September 24. Tickets are currently available.

Golf-Woods banking on major experience

GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 | Sat Jul 20, 2013 8:37pm BST

GULLANE, Scotland, July 20 (Reuters) - Tiger Woods will rely on his experience of winning major titles when he bids for number 15 in the final round of the British Open on Sunday.

The 37-year-old American starts out two shots behind Briton Lee Westwood, his playing partner in the third round who is seeking to end a long wait for a first major.

"I'm pleased where I'm at," Woods told reporters after shooting a one-over-par 72 for a one-under aggregate of 212.

"I'm only two back. There's only one guy ahead of me. I've got 14 of these things and I know what it takes to win it."

Woods is not expecting Westwood to fold under the pressure.

"He's won tournaments all over the world," he said. "He knows how to win golf tournaments. He's two shots ahead and we're going to go out there and both compete and play."

Woods is level with compatriot Hunter Mahan with U.S. Masters champion Adam Scott a shot further back.

"There's a bunch of guys who have a chance to win this tournament," said the world number one who will play with Scott in the final round. "And all of us need to really play well tomorrow to win it."

Woods has not won a major title for five years and claimed the last of his three British Opens in 2006.

"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of it. I've been in this position before, in the past five years. I've been in that hunt and I'm in it again."

Woods fell three shots behind Westwood after seven holes but took advantage of two bogeys by the Englishman to cut the gap.

The pair were locked together at two-under for much of the back nine before Westwood birdied the 17th and Woods bogeyed it to prompt a two-shot swing.

"I was just plodding along, just be patient, play my own game," Woods said. "These are really tough hole locations, it's really hard to make birdies."

He was left to rue a couple of missed birdie opportunities but he was happy with his performance.

"I felt like I played well today, I really did," he said. "I had a couple of opportunities to make a couple of putts, I just didn't do it.

"Caught a couple of weird bounces out there which is normal. Tomorrow, hopefully, I can play just a little bit better and make a couple of more putts." (Editing by Tony Jimenez)

North London ease to victory in the MailOnline Mascot Derby

By Nik Simon

North London made history on Friday night as they became the first team to defend the MailOnline Sport Mascot Derby.

The Kia Oval was more like a gladiators' coliseum as a packed crowd roared on their furry friends during the interval of Surrey Lions vs Hampshire Royals.

Caesar the Lion's tail was almost set alight by the pre-race pyrotechnics but it was his Middlesex rival, Pinky the Panther, who lit up the third annual race.

Surrey Lions will face the Kent Spitfires at The Kia Oval on Friday 26 July.

Tickets are available for the final home FLt20 match of the season at www.kiaoval.com.

It was an opportunity to settle old scores and the tension levels were almost unbearable as local rivals came face to face in the dressing rooms.

Chirpy the Cockerel of Tottenham was teamed up with Bubbles and Hammerhead of West Ham while Billy the Badger of Fulham was allied with Jude the Cat of QPR.

The race was delayed as Jude the Cat went in search of the nearest food outlet and he looked like he had eaten one too many burgers as Team South faltered early on.

Team North captain, Pinky the Panther, said afterwards:

'This is a glorious day for North London and we are worth winners.

'It was a tough race but there was never any doubt who was going to win this one.'

Leap Motion controllers now shipping

Would you look at that? Seems Leap Motion's eagerly awaited motion controller has started shipping a few days early -- well, a few days before its delayed July 22nd date, but we'll take it. We've received a couple of confirmations from future Leapers that their devices are on the way. Until they actually arrive, however, why not take a look at some of the apps developers have been working on for the system?

Ex-NSA chief: Huawei spies for China, Snowden security leak 'most destructive' in U.S. history

China-based network hardware company Huawei poses an "unambiguous national security threat" to the United States, according to former CIA and NSA director Michael Hayden in an interview with the Australian Financial Review.

Hayden, who is a retired four-star Air Force general, also deemed Edward Snowden's exposure of the United States' PRISM program "the single most destructive leak of American security information in our history," adding that Americans will be far more comfortable with the nation's secretive surveillance programs "once the media gives us a proper opportunity to explain exactly what it is the U.S. intelligence community does for its people."

Hayden isn't the first U.S. official to raise doubt about Huawei's trustworthiness as a business partner. Late last year, a U.S. House Intelligence Committee released a damning report about Huawei (and ZTE), saying the companies posed a national security threat to the United States because of their potential to spy and steal data on behalf of the Chinese government. The committee also "strongly encouraged [U.S. companies] to consider the long-term security risks associated with doing business with [the company]" and advised "U.S. network providers and systems developers ... to seek other vendors for their projects."

The U.K. government has some misgivings about Huawei as well: It is launching a review of the vetting process it uses for Huawei products. In particular, the U.K. government is upset that Huawei was able to sell networking products directly to major network operator BT without proper vetting. The company has a Cyber Security Evaluation Centre in the U.K., but it is under direct control of Huawei; the U.K. wants to staff the evaluation team with employees from the British intelligence agency so as to head off any potential Chinese espionage using Huawei equipment.

But Hayden was more direct in accusing Huawei of spying for China: "Two or three years ago, Huawei was trying to establish a pretty significant footprint here in the United States. ... I reviewed Huawei's briefing paper, which said all the right things. ... But God did not make enough briefing slides on Huawei to convince me that having them involved in our critical communications infrastructure was going to be OK," Hayden said. "My conclusion was that, no, it is simply not acceptable for Huawei to be creating the backbone of the domestic telecommunications network in the United States, period."

AFR interviewer Christopher Joye asked Hayden point-blank whether "it is reasonable to assume that hard evidence exists that Huawei has engaged in espionage on behalf of the Chinese state."

To that, Hayden replied, "Yes, that's right. And, at a minimum, Huawei would have shared with the Chinese state intimate and extensive knowledge of the foreign telecommunications systems it is involved with. I think that goes without saying. That's one reality."

Hayden also had some choice words about former NSA contractor Snowden. "He's certainly not a hero," said Hayden. "The word 'traitor' has a very narrowly defined legal meaning that he may not in the end quite meet. I personally think Snowden is a very troubled, narcissistic young man who has done a very, very bad thing."

Snowden, by Hayden's reckoning, leaked details about the PRISM program "because of his ideological embrace of transparency as a virtue. ... It is a little like the Boston bombers. The issue [in the Boston bombings case] is at what point does Islamic fundamentalism flip over and become a genuine national security threat?" Hayden said. "Likewise, at what point does a cultural tendency toward transparency flip [as in the Snowden case] over to become a deep threat inside your system? They are similar issues."

Whatever his motives, Snowden's leaks have already made the United States more insecure, according to Hayden. "The Snowden leaks have the potential, if not already the reality, to be the most single most destructive leak of American security information in our history," Hayden said. "Snowden is attempting to reveal the underlying architecture of the U.S. intelligence-gathering network. We've lost cups of water before. We've lost buckets of water. Yet this is a guy who is exposing the very plumbing that pipes the information. He's exposing the methods through which we access information."

Beyond criticizing Snowden for exposing PRISM, Hayden chastised the media for "[mangling] this story so badly that Americans don't quite understand what it is that their government is or is not doing."

"When the media gives us a proper opportunity to explain exactly what it is the U.S. intelligence community does for its people, then I think we can make Americans very comfortable," Hayden said.

Moody's raises US outlook to 'stable' from 'negative'

markets

Moody's Investors Service on Thursday raised the U.S. sovereign outlook to stable from negative and affirmed the country's triple-A rating, citing steady growth despite reduced government spending.

The rating agency's move eased the threat of a cut to the world's biggest economy.

Moody's said the federal government's debt trajectory is on track with criteria the rating agency previously laid out, even without further budget measures from Washington.

The economy is growing moderately, but it is still "progressing at a faster rate compared with several Aaa peers and has demonstrated a degree of resilience to major reductions in the growth of government spending," Moody's said in a statement.

The U.S. budget outlook has brightened in recent months, alleviating some of the pressure on policymakers for more fiscal compromises.

On May 14, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said the U.S. federal budget deficit is shrinking at a faster pace than expected, and forecast this fiscal year would end with the smallest shortfall since 2008.

"We feel that we have enough information on the debt trajectory at this point to make a conclusion even without information on any possible further actions in Washington," said Steven Hess, Moody's lead U.S. sovereign credit analyst.

Even the possibility of further debate on raising the U.S. debt ceiling this year - allowing the government to keep borrowing money - is unlikely to hurt the rating, Hess said.

"We think that they will raise the debt ceiling, as they always have in the past," he said. "But even if there's some delay, we're not too concerned about that affecting the government's ability to service its debt."

Analysts said the affirmation means the U.S. sovereign rating could be safer now for years to come.

"We are still running sizable deficits but they are not getting worse," said Guy LeBas, chief fixed-income strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia.

"Barring a nuclear event or the re-emergence of the debt ceiling problem, this drastically reduces the chance of a U.S. downgrade in the next couple of years," he added.

Last month Fitch also affirmed the U.S. sovereign AAA rating. But that agency kept a negative outlook, saying still-elevated debt levels leave the country vulnerable to shocks without more deficit reduction.

Standard & Poor's rates the country AA-plus, with a stable outlook. S&P cut the rating in August 2011 after a bruising round of debt ceiling debates in Washington raised fears of political dysfunction.

In addition, Moody's affirmed the Aaa senior ratings of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Federal Home Loan Banks and the Federal Farm Credit Banks, which the agency considers to be directly linked to the rating of the U.S. government.

While the stable outlook means the agency is unlikely to cut the U.S. sovereign rating in the medium term, Moody's noted that could change in the future.

"Without further fiscal consolidation efforts, government deficits are anticipated to increase once again over the longer term," the Moody's statement said.

The outlook covers the next couple years or so, Hess said. After that, he added, "a triple-A rating is not guaranteed forever."

Former Powell coach joins Sparks' staff at Carson-Newman

Former Powell head coach Derek Rang has joined Ken Sparks' staff at Carson-Newman as the graduate assistant in charge of receivers.

Rang spent two seasons building a reputation for defense at West High School under Scott Cummings before taking over as head coach at Powell for a season.

Here is more on Rang's new position from Carson-Newman:

Carson-Newman head football coach Ken Sparks has announced the hiring of former Powell head coach Derek Rang as the program's new graduate assistant in charge of receivers.

Rang resigned from Powell after one season after he was placed on administrative leave with pay following allegations of testing irregularities during an End of Course Algebra II test he was administering and that he left the class unattended during the testing.? However, Sparks has no qualms about his new coach's character nor giving him a second chance.?

"Derek has a long history of proving himself," Sparks said. "He comes highly recommended by coaching staffs at Maryville high school and college (where he played), at Knoxville West (where he was a defensive coordinator) and the folks that worked with him at Powell.? To me that outweighs the fact that he made a mistake.

"I think the Lord works all that out in a way that he winds up at Carson-Newman and we're certainly glad he's here."

In his lone season at Powell, Rang guided the Panthers to a 12-2 record, an appearance in the Class 5A state semifinals and the number three ranking in the state.? The Panthers rolled up 416 points and 5,247 yards of total offense under Rang's guidance.?

"I'm thankful for Coach Sparks for giving me the opportunity," Rang said. "It supports the core values that I believe in.? I'm just ready to help develop kids to be better men in the world today.

"Spiritually, this program isn't about wins and losses; it's about the growth of the individual.? As they go on in their life path, I want to instill in them Christian principles that help them along the way."

Prior to Powell, Rang spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at West where the Rebels notched back-to-back 11-3 records.? His defenses forced 81 turnovers in a two-year span, including 43 in 2010, which ranks third all-time in the TSSAA record books.

"He has an openness to learn and grow that I really appreciate," Sparks said. "He knows he's got work to do and that makes me excited.? He has a wonderful youthful enthusiasm that's really energizing."

Rang will work with a receiving corps that loses a key cog in Jason Brown, but returns leading receivers Steven Isom and Anthony Eubanks.? Isom grabbed 21 balls for 317 yards while Eubanks had eight receptions for 139 yards.? Both players averaged more than 15 yards a catch.?

"They work hard," Rang said. "The receivers compete and finish.? And we've got a good mix of some guys with some size, but also some elusiveness.? I think it'll be a smooth transition."

The Eagles open their season Sept. 5 against Wayne State at 7 p.m.

Kansas City Mayor: Gun buy back programs don?t reduce shootings, curfews do

Posted on: 6:20 am, July 17, 2013, by Matt Stewart, updated on: 06:37am, July 17, 2013

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Gun ownership is such a hot topic right now. Some want tougher gun laws while others fight for the right to bear arms. But regardless of where you stand on this issue, one truth remains. Too many people are being shot to death, killed by guns and the people who use them.

According to Kansas City police, 56 people have been killed so far in 2013. That?s about the same number of people who were killed by this time of year in each of the past five years. Forty-eight of those killed this year died from gunfire.

Mayor Sly James recently posted a blog about what he thinks should be done to stop gun violence. He argues that gun buy back programs and vigils aren?t working.

What he believes is working are city-wide curfews, the opening of community centers to young teens and the efforts of the Kansas City No Violence Alliance where officers, prosecutors and federal officials work together to get violent criminals off the streets while providing potential criminals the resources to find a job.

But he says the overall best way to reduce inner city violence is to improve the school system.

Only 33 percent of all third graders in Kansas City can read proficiently and the Mayor says those who can?t read by third grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school.
Many of those who don?t graduate go to a life of crime where it costs three times as much to jail them than to educate them.

He believes the Turn the Page program and Early Childhood Education Commission will help improve the education of Kansas City children. But he adds it takes time to turn around a culture of violence and he hopes parents will take responsibility and steer their children away from the cycle of violence still plaguing Kansas City streets.
