Kanye West's Twitter review of 'Pacific Rim'

Kanye West isn?t what you?d call an active member of the Twitterverse. Even though he?s racked up nearly 10 million Twitter followers, he?s following just one person -- any guesses? (If you answered Kim Kardashian, you win. Perhaps he?ll make it two as soon as their new baby, North West, registers for his own Twitter account.)

He?s also sent only nine tweets ? dating back only as far as May 17, pretty much using the social networking service to build anticipation for his latest album, ?Yeezus,? ahead of its June 18 release.

West did send one post after the album dropped to let followers in on a gift he received for his first Father?s Day, just nine days after North was born June 15. He tweeted a photo of two autographed Apple computer mouses, one signed ?Woz? for Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, the other ?Steve Jobs,? by Woz?s partner in the historic computer startup.

West?s two latest tweets, however, make it appear that the rapper may be laying the groundwork for a secondary career as a film critic.

?I saw a pre-screening of Pacific Rim yesterday,? West tweeted Wednesday of the new Guillermo del Toro action movie due out July 16.

His assessment? ?It's easily one of my favorite movies of all time.?

But that?s not all, folks. ?This is not another ?Robot? movie,? he said in a follow-up Twitter post. ?Guillermo del Toro is a master.?

Pop & Hiss can?t wait to find out what he thinks about Jamie Foxx?s performance in ?White House Down.?

Public beta registration now open for the Xbox 360's 2013 Live update

It's that time of the year again, and we're not talking about the long Independence Day weekend. Microsoft has opened up public beta registration for the 2013 Xbox Live update, and this time around you'll need to log your interest directly through an Xbox 360 console. Only Xbox owners in Japan will be missing out, although they'll have the same opportunity "at a later date." There should be a tile on the dashboard home screen entitled "Xbox Beta Program," and with limited spots available, we recommend you sign up immediately if you'd like to participate -- last year's spots were filled pretty quickly. There doesn't appear to be anything exciting included in the beta; Major Nelson cites "updates to improve overall performance" and the option to purchase content with actual money instead of MS points. There may be more details in the beta FAQ when it goes live later today, but if you get into the program and find anything juicy MS neglected to mention, it hopes you'll honor the NDA which you'll agree to as part of the registration process.

EU toughens penalties for internet-based crimes

Virtual crime can lead to very real damage, and the European Parliament knows this well enough to have just issued a draft directive toughening up the EU's penalties for internet-based violations. Get caught running a botnet and you'll face a minimum of three years in prison; dare to attack critical infrastructure and you may spend five years behind bars. Don't think of hiring someone for corporate espionage, either -- the directive makes whole companies liable for online offenses committed in their name. EU nations will have two years to adopt the directive as law, although an existing, unofficial agreement suggests that at least some countries won't wait that long to enforce the new rules.
