Victory Or Defeat? Emotions Aren't All In The Face

Can You Tell Emotion From Faces Alone? Answers: Faces 1, 4 and 6 show losing points, while 2, 3 and 5 are examples of winning points.

Photos of athletes in their moment of victory or defeat usually show faces contorted with intense emotion. But a new study suggests that people actually don't use those kinds of extreme facial expressions to judge how a person is feeling.

Instead, surprisingly, people rely on body cues.

Hillel Aviezer, a psychology researcher at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, wanted to see how accurately people can read intense, real-world facial expressions ? instead of the standardized, posed images of facial expressions that are usually used in lab tests.

So he and his colleagues decided to do some experiments using images of professional tennis players. That's because, in top tennis matches, the stakes are sky high, and professional players instantly have an intense emotional reaction to winning or losing a critical point. And usually, people have no trouble figuring out what emotions a tennis player is feeling when they see a photo of that player standing on a tennis court, clutching a racket.

"When I look at a sports magazine, and I see the full picture of a person winning a point, and he has his full gesture, the whole picture makes perfect sense to me," says Aviezer. "The face looks like a victorious face, and the body looks victorious; everything together seems to make perfect sense."

But that sense of certainty disappeared, he found, when he took images of tennis winners and losers, and erased everything but the face. When he showed just those isolated faces to people, they couldn't tell if something positive or negative was going on.

"This was really a very striking finding," says Aviezer.

Then he showed people images of tennis players with the faces erased. People had to judge winners from losers based solely on the rest of the body. "And when people saw the body alone, they easily knew if this was a positive or negative emotion," explains Aviezer.

This is counterintuitive, he says, because people usually assume that if they are getting an emotional message, it must come from the facial expression.

In fact, when Aviezer shows people full images of tennis players ? the faces plus the body ? and asks them to describe how they know what the player is feeling, people usually describe the face. They claim to see tell-tale clues in the player's eyes or mouth. "When in fact it's an illusion," says Aviezer. "They have this false idea of information in the face when really it's coming from the body."

To test this in another way, he manipulated the photographs. He'd take the face of a winner and paste it onto the body of a loser, or vice versa.

What he found was that the exact same face would be interpreted as showing a positive or negative emotion, depending on which body it was on. These results are reported in the journal Science.

"I think that many people will find this very surprising," says Lisa Feldman Barrett, a scientist at Northeastern University who studies emotions.

These studies challenge long-held assumptions about the importance of facial expressions, she says.

"When you and I talk to each other and we look at each other, we're really looking at each other's faces. That's where our attention is. And so the assumption has been that that's where all the information is, too," says Barrett. "But these studies show very clearly that that's not the case."

These findings add to a growing body of evidence that when we're trying to figure out another person's emotional state, we rely on a lot more than just the face.

4 Legal References for SMBs and Informed Readers ? Small, Mobile ...

Old Tyme Legal AdWhether or not you are a small business owner, you are probably exposed to legal topics on a regular basis. There are daily news developments regarding patent lawsuits, especially in the mobile arena. ?I?m not a lawyer? (INAL) is a common phrase you?ll see on message boards and blogs as individuals seek informal guidance on areas such as business formation and Intellectual Property (IP) issues.

While you always have the option of consulting a licensed attorney, you may first want to do your own research so you can have an informed conversation. I?ve found the publications from Nolo? to be extremely helpful for general and business-specific legal knowledge. Here are some recommendations from my personal library.

Nolo?s Encyclopedia of Everyday Law ? covers a variety of subjects for your business and home, and is a good first step when you begin your research.

Greece debt relief lies ahead, despite latest eurozone deal (5 ...

BRUSSELS ? Within minutes of eurozone finance ministers reaching a deal to cut Greece?s debt late on Monday, commentators on Twitter were dismissing it as another exercise in ?kicking the can down the road?.

To an extent that is true. Under the agreement, the euro zone and the International Monetary Fund will give Greece two more years to reach its budget goals and will find another 44-billion euros (US$57-billion) to keep the country afloat in the meantime.

But while a degree of can-kicking may be going on, there was a critical element in Monday night?s deal that goes a lot further than any other step taken so far in the debt crisis to get Greece back on its feet.

Implicit was an understanding that Greece will undergo some form of official-sector debt restructuring ? with eurozone countries forgiving a portion of Greece?s debt ? at some point in the future, the sort of last-ditch measure usually reserved for impoverished states in Africa and Latin America.

School readiness big Head Start goal | The Islander

STUDENTS INTERACT in a learning game with teacher Melody Little in a Head Start class in Kaysville. Photo by Tom Busselberg | The Islander

BY TOM BUSSELBERG
Islander Editor?

KAYSVILLE- A big underlying goal within Head Start?s efforts is preparing the students to be ready for entrance into kindergarten and the traditional school experience.

?We?re working hard on it,? said Judy Jackson, director of Davis County Head Start.

That means helping students and parents in getting their children ready, ultimately, to enter kindergarten, said MariAnne Henderson, education manager.

Families play a critical role in helping their children prepare for school and a lifetime of academic success, said Roger King, infant, toddler and health manager.

Five ?essential domains?? are part of that readiness, including language and literacy, cognition and general knowledge, approaches to learning, physical development and health, and social and emotion development, he said.

Early Head Start and Head Start emphasize strong parental involvement as a part of their regular programs. That includes regular parent volunteerism in their children?s classroom.

For those parents where English isn?t their native language, classes are provided, Jackson said.

?Parents want to learn English. They are anxious,? because they know it will be a strong benefit, she said.

Each child is closely assessed three times a year on such issues as understanding number concepts, cognition, general knowledge and more, Henderson said.

Goals are set in each area and plans set up for teachers to work with parents on helping individual children succeed, she said.

?The big focus is on the individual,? King said. ?We want to make sure each child is getting what he or she needs.?

Providing a secure foundation for child development and early learning is the goal, ultimately meaning that children enter preschool and eventually school, ready to succeed, he said.

Two examples of goal objectives and activities include: ability for a 4-year-old to count to 20 with accuracy, explore and describe spatial relationships, knowledge of standard measuring tools, and recognizes, duplicates and extends a simple pattern.

The school readiness program is new but the expectation has always been there to focus on preparing each student to move successfully forward, King said.

The entire program is aligned with federal, state and district standards in coordination with common core standards, Jackson said.

Head Start operates 21 sites and about two-dozen classrooms throughout Davis County.

Although children are drawn from economically disadvantaged households, Head Start has proven its worth as a way for these students to achieve, Jackson said.

Tests have shown students typically start at 40 percent below the level of their peers in kindergarten without Head Start. After completing the program, that gap closes to within 2 or 3 percent, she said.

A related story in this issue shares the success story of a Kaysville student who faced enormous physical and other problems.

US federal mediators to join NHL labor talks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal mediators are entering the stalled NHL labor talks, with the season's first 2? months already lost because of the lockout.

George Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, said Monday the parties had agreed to use the agency. He assigned three mediators to assist negotiations ? deputy director Scot Beckenbaugh, director of mediation services John Sweeney and Commissioner Guy Serota ? who was removed later in the day because of a Twitter account that may have been tampered with.

The sides are to meet separately with the mediators Wednesday.

"While we have no particular level of expectation going into this process, we welcome a new approach in trying to reach a resolution of the ongoing labor dispute at the earliest possible date," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

Cohen has worked with the players' associations for Major League Baseball, helping end the 1994-95 strike as an outside counsel, and the NBA. He was an adviser to the NHL players' union before joining FMCS three years ago.

"We look forward to their involvement as we continue working to reach an equitable agreement for both the players and the owners," said Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHL Players' Association.

Cohen mediated during the 2010 negotiations in Major League Soccer and 2011 talks in the NFL and NBA, along with this year's dispute between the NFL and its on-field officials.

Cohen said Serota was removed because "within one hour after I issued a press release ... it has been called to my attention that there are issues involving an allegedly hacked Twitter account associated with Commissioner Guy Serota." He said Serota was removed "to immediately dispel any cloud on the mediation process, and without regard to the merits of the allegations."

Hockey players and management have not negotiated since last Wednesday. The NHL has canceled more than one-third of its regular season, including all games through Dec. 14, the New Year's Day outdoor Winter Classic and the All-Star weekend scheduled for Jan. 26-27 at Columbus, Ohio.

"I have had separate, informal discussions with the key representatives of the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association during the course of their negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement," Cohen said in a statement.

"Due to the extreme sensitivity of these negotiations and consistent with the FMCS's longstanding practice, the agency will refrain from any public comment concerning the future schedule and/or the status of the negotiations until further notice."

Beckenbaugh was a mediator during the 2004-05 lockout, a stoppage that caused cancellation of the entire season.

NY Times CEO Mark Thompson in London for BBC testimony

(Reuters) - New York Times Co Chief Executive Mark Thompson was in London on Friday to answer questions at a BBC inquiry involving a shelved "Newsnight" program about the late Jimmy Savile, who is accused of sexually abusing hundreds of young people for decades.

"Thompson is expected to be back in the office on Monday," said a New York Times spokesman who confirmed Thompson was at the BBC-appointed inquiry.

Thompson was head of the BBC from 2004 until September during the controversy surrounding the news program that investigated the allegations about Savile.

While the program never aired, the BBC instead ran laudatory shows about Savile, the popular "Top of the Pops" BBC presenter, who died last year.

In October, a rival broadcaster aired a program about Savile that tipped a series of scandals -- including another Newsnight program that wrongly accused a former politician of committing sexual abuse-- that has roiled the British broadcaster.

It caused its director general George Entwistle to step down and has sparked police and parliamentary inquiries

The Guardian reported on Friday that Thompson was expected to be questioned about what he knew about the Savile allegations and when he knew about them. Thompson was not at the BBC during the other Newsnight program that aired false allegations.

Thompson did not immediately responded to a request for comment about the details of the inquiry.

Thompson started his job at the New York Times on November 12.

On Thursday the BBC named to head of the Royal Opera House Tony Hall as its director general to help restore the broadcaster as Britain's most treasured institutions.

Susan Rice: why GOP opposition to her is no longer white-hot

It?s looking more likely that if President Obama wants Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the United Nations, as his next secretary of State, he?ll get his wish.

Key Republicans are softening their opposition to any promotion of Ambassador Rice. Notably, Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona has replaced his outright opposition with a willingness now to hear her case, should she be nominated.

The less strident tone from Senator McCain and other Republicans over the weekend suggests that the hyper-partisan atmosphere that prevailed in the election campaign and in the immediate aftermath of Mr. Obama?s reelection may be ceding to a more bipartisan approach to foreign policy ? and to the general rule that, barring any egregious disqualifiers, the president should get the foreign-policy and national-security team he wants.

RECOMMENDED: Five ways events overseas could shape Obama's second term

Opposition to Rice flared up over her depiction of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead, including the US ambassador to Libya. Working from a set of talking points provided by the Central Intelligence Agency when she appeared on Sunday news shows Sept. 16, Rice described the attack as a ?spontaneous? act that grew out of a copycat reaction to widespread demonstrations against an anti-Islam video.

Prominent Republican senators including McCain and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina vowed to oppose Rice?s nomination to any higher office, while a group of 97 House Republicans took the unusual step of sending a letter to Obama saying they opposed Rice?s possible nomination for secretary of State ? even though the House has no role in approving presidential nominations.

A heated debate ensued that included charges from Democrats of Republican sexism and racism (Rice being an African-American woman). By the weekend, key Republican voices tempered their rhetoric.

McCain said on ?Fox News Sunday? that he?d ?be glad to have the opportunity to discuss these issues with? Rice, while Senator Graham said on ABC?s ?This Week? that he blames the president more than Rice for the administration?s depiction of the Benghazi attack and its reluctance to call it a terrorist attack.

Still, Graham said that if Obama does nominate Rice, ?there will be a lot of questions asked of her about this event and others.? Also, he vowed to pursue an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Over on NBC?s ?Meet the Press,? House Republican Peter King of New York lauded Rice?s work at the UN, particularly on North Korea. But as for the argument that Rice was speaking from vetted intelligence talking points when she went on national television five days after the attack, Representative King said that as a senior administration official, ?she has an obligation not to just be a puppet and take what?s handed to her.?

Obama has not nominated Rice, nor has he said whom he plans to name to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has said she plans to step down once her successor is in place. But speculation has centered on Rice and Sen. John Kerry (D) of Massachusetts. Recently, some White House officials have hinted that the president might prefer Rice at State and could name Senator Kerry as Defense secretary if, as anticipated, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta steps down next year.

The shift in the GOP stance on Rice appears to reflect a number of developments, including the Democratic charges of racism and sexism ? which come as the Republicans assess their weak showing with women and minorities in general in the November elections. The changed tone also follows recent testimony from former CIA director David Petraeus, who told senators that Rice?s talking points ? and the failure to call Benghazi a terrorist attack ? reflected a desire among intelligence officials not to tip off terrorist groups in eastern Libya that the United States was aware of their involvement.

Perhaps more important are the opinions of respected foreign-policy analysts, a number of whom have said that Rice has served ably at the UN and should not be judged over an event that she did not set policy for.

Robert Kagan, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, wrote in The Washington Post Nov. 18 that Republicans concerned about Benghazi should focus not on Rice?s television performance but on the administration?s preparedness for the safety of diplomats in dangerous places. He also said that, were Obama to nominate either Rice or Kerry, ?the Senate should vote to confirm.?

As for King saying that senior administration officials ?have an obligation not to just be a puppet? for the president: A variety of media outlets, including National Review and USA Today, have made a comparison with the Bush administration sending Colin Powell, then secretary of State, to the UN to justify a US war on Iraq.

Before the world?s television cameras, Mr. Powell presented ?evidence? of Saddam Hussein?s stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. The evidence, as it turned out, was false.

Gossip and celebrities go hand in hand, whether the industry is local, national and international. We follow the "frandula" to be lead to the "chismes" and follow the "chismes" to broadcast it. Gossip is the out come of natural human tendencies to communicate, socialize, feel the belongingness to a group and majorly because we enjoy it. Gossip about celebrities and movie actors are issues people bond over and discuss as a part of their daily dose of entertainment. We gossip about the failed relationship of these actors, their latest flicks, their plastic surgeries, their attire and even the disastrous or exciting life stories. The showbiz goes on and spreads like a rapid fire, these days, more rapidly than ever due to the usage of internet and social media network.

Britney Spears being a horrible mom or Lady Gaga putting on 30 pounds are all the part of the gossip circle, in this rumor circus. Some of the major gossip which hit the crowd includes marriage and divorce, bumper pre-nup agreements, cheating partners of celebrities, pregnant actresses, and ironically, everything except what really matters for their careers. The lives of actors and celebrities help us with stories which help us understand success and cautionary measures better. Some of us take inspirations from their lives for good, some for worse. Once a person becomes a celebrity, his or her life is no more private. Everything that they do reflects their personality and people tend to get curious about them. We don't even know these celebrities in real life, yet the frandula and their chismes are followed with craze unfathomable. We may blame our psychology for the desperate urge we have to gossip and spread the word, but truly speaking, we love to gossip. That is what makes these movie and celebrity related periodicals and columns so popular and center of attention.

Even the celebrity cover magazines sell more than non celebrity cover magazines. We even tend to follow these celebrities so blindly that it gives the companies the freedom to pay them handsome amounts to be the brand ambassadors for their products and endorse them, compelling the followers to buy those products, solely because we believe stories revolving around those celebrities. These stories are often responsible for making or breaking the careers of the actors and celebrities. Right from teens who are followers of Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez or the classic fans of Tom Cruise, Brangelina, Pitbull and Al Pacino, gossip follows all the genres of fan following.

Hordes of shoppers are descending on stores to snap up the best deals of the year.

Black Friday, the day when retailers traditionally turn a profit for the year, actually got a jump start this year as many stores opened just as families were finishing up Thanksgiving dinner.

Stores are experimenting with ways to compete with online rivals like Amazon.com that can offer holiday shopping deals at any time and on any day. And this year, crowds gathered across the country as stores such as Target and Toys R Us opened on Thanksgiving evening, while retailers from Macy's to Best Buy opened their doors at midnight on Black Friday.

"I only shop for sales," says Joan Riedewald, one of thousands of shoppers on line at Macy's flagship store in New York City's Herald Square.

Retailers are hoping that the earlier openings will help boost sales this holiday season. It is unclear how many shoppers took advantage of the earlier openings. But about 17 percent of shoppers said earlier this month that they planned to shop at stores that opened on Thanksgiving, according to an International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs survey. Overall, it's estimated that sales on Black Friday will be up 3.8 percent to $11.4 billion this year.

Here, in images, are scenes from Black Friday from across the nation:

The evolution of human intellect: Human-specific regulation of neuronal genes

Thursday, November 22, 2012

A new study published November 20 in the open-access journal PLOS Biology has identified hundreds of small regions of the genome that appear to be uniquely regulated in human neurons. These regulatory differences distinguish us from other primates, including monkeys and apes, and as neurons are at the core of our unique cognitive abilities, these features may ultimately hold the key to our intellectual prowess (and also to our potential vulnerability to a wide range of 'human-specific' diseases from autism to Alzheimer's).

Exploring which features in the genome separate human neurons from their non-human counterparts has been a challenging task until recently; primate genomes comprise billions of base pairs (the basic building blocks of DNA), and comparisons between the human and chimpanzee genomes alone reveal close to 40 million differences. Most of these are thought to merely reflect random 'genetic drift' during the course of evolution, so the challenge was to identify the small set of changes that have functionally important consequences, as these might help to explain the genomic basis of the emergence of human-specific neuronal function.

The key to the present study, led by Dr Schahram Akbarian of the University of Massachusetts and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, was not to focus on the "letters" of the DNA code, but rather on what might be called its "font" or "typeface"?the DNA strands of the genome are wrapped in protein to make a chromatin fiber, and the way in which they are wrapped, the "chromatin state", in turn reflects the regulatory state of that region of the genome (e.g. whether a given gene is turned on or off). This is the field that biologists call "epigenetics"?the study of the "epigenome".

Dr Akbarian and colleagues set out to isolate small snippets of chromatin fibers from the frontal cortex, a brain region involved in complex cognitive operations. They were then able to analyze these snippets for the chemical signals (histone methylation) that define the regulatory state (on/off) of the chromatin. The results of their analysis identified hundreds of regions throughout the genome which showed a markedly different chromatin structure in neurons from human children and adults, compared to chimpanzees and macaques.

This treasure trove of short genomic regions is now providing researchers with interesting new leads involving the evolution of the human brain. Although some of the regions have remained unchanged during primate evolution, some more tantalizing ones have recently changed, having a DNA sequence that is unique to humans and our close extinct relatives, the Neanderthals and the Denisovans. The study also uncovered examples where several of these regulatory DNA regions appear to physically interact with each other inside the cell nucleus, despite being separated by hundreds of thousands of base pairs on the linear genome. This phenomenon of "chromatin looping" is implicated in controlling the expression of neighboring genes, including several with a critical role for human brain development.

The study, from laboratories based in the United States, Switzerland and Russia, draws further attention to the role of epigenetics and the epigenome in our biology and our evolution. As Dr Akbarian notes, "Much about human biology and disease cannot be deduced by simply sequencing the genome. Mapping the epigenome of neurons and other cells will help us to better understand the inner workings of our brain, and where we are coming from."

When Falls the Coliseum ? Black Friday having a bad day

No Gravatar

I like to imagine that this guy?s name is Friday. He?s been dealing with an unusual name his whole life, and once a year his friends have teased him when all the dreaded Black Friday stories come on the news. He never shops on Black Friday ? his friends would make too many jokes. He hates being teased. He?s afraid of being?embarrassed.?So he stays home every year while everyone else gets great deals. Year after year Friday sits on the couch and watches TV while his friends shop and save money on Black Friday. But last year his TV breaks right before Thanksgiving. His wife makes him come with her to buy a new TV on Black Friday. She tells him to ignore his teasing friends and come buy a new TV already. So Friday goes with his wife to the store on Black Friday and gets a great deal on a new TV, and when he?s walking out of the store, he?s pleased that he overcame his fear of being embarrassed and is smiling wide because he just bought a big TV. Just then a photographer snaps this shot, and today the picture is on the front page of CNN.com. Friday?s phone starts beeping with texts from his friends?

China manufacturing grows after 13-month slide

BEIJING (AP) ? A private survey says China's manufacturing has expanded for the first time in 13 months in November, a further sign that the world's No. 2 economy is recovering from its deepest slump since the 2008 global crisis.

HSBC's monthly Purchasing Managers' Index improved to 50.4 for November on a 100-point scale on which numbers over 50 indicate expansion. It is the first time in 13 months that the reading has been above 50. That was a moderate improvement from October's 49.5.

The PMI indexes measure overall manufacturing activity by surveying numerous indicators including orders, employment and actual production.

The Chinese numbers are rare good news for the world economy, which has slowed as Europe's chronic debt crisis worsened and the American economy stagnated.

Stores prep for holiday shopping madness

NEW YORK (Frankfurt: A0DKRK - news) (Reuters) - Add this to the list of things some people are thankful for: stores open on Thanksgiving Day. That's how Janet Guerrero, 24, felt when shopping on Thursday afternoon at a Wal-Mart in Westbury, Long Island, because she had nothing to wear to dinner. "It's an emergency," she said.

This year, Target Corp has joined Wal-Mart and Gap Inc in being open at least part of the day, and some retailers will be open throughout the day, a trend that began to take hold in 2011.

Walmart's U.S. discount stores, which have been open on Thanksgiving Day since 1988, will offer some "Black Friday" deals at 8 p.m. local time and special deals on some electronics at 10 p.m. Target (Berlin: DYH.BE - news) has moved its opening from midnight to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Toys R Us is opening at 8 p.m.

"It's a recognition that retailers need to be more aggressive and want to show their physical stores are important," Moody's senior analyst Charles O'Shea said.

While he didn't see enormous crowds out in Vauxhall, New Jersey, he did see about 15 people lined up already at a Best Buy (Dusseldorf: 912551.DU - news) , which opens at midnight. At a Target in Westbury, only two lone shoppers were in line for a 9 p.m. opening. Still, for retailers, any crowd could make the effort worth it.

"It's a finite pie - if you can get a bit more by being open, then do it," O'Shea said.

Other retailers, such as J.C. Penney Co Inc , are holding out and will not open until Friday morning, so shoppers trying to get all the deals will need a lot of stamina.

"The retailers are taking what was a very plannable sport that was four or five hours where you can get things done and turned it into a marathon," Trutina Financial Chief Investment Officer Patty Edwards said. "I think the retailers have diluted the sport."

Even some higher-end retailers had select stores open on Thursday. But crowds were thin at the flagship Lord & Taylor on 5th Avenue, where workers voluntarily signed up for holiday shifts for an extra compensation day and holiday pay.

At other stores, workers were not so happy to have early openings encroach on their Thanksgivings. A petition asking Target to "save Thanksgiving" had 371,606 supporters as of Thursday afternoon.

But shopper Pamela Herman, 54, who works in marketing at Mt. Sinai hospital, was drawn in by the extra discount of 50 percent on already reduced items and said she would not have bothered to come in without the sale.

Traditionally, retailers enticed shoppers with "doorbuster" deals early Friday morning. Then they shifted to midnight following Thanksgiving. But many shoppers lured into stores by earlier openings on Thursday may just be window shopping.

More than 50 percent of consumers will do some form of "showrooming" during the Black Friday weekend, said Kevin Sterneckert, vice president of retail research at Gartner Group.

"They will buy things because they looked at it in the store. They will touch and feel what they are interested in and then buy it online on Monday, either from the same retailer or a different online retailer," Sterneckert said.

At the Kmart on 34th Street in Manhattan (Berlin: 32U.BE - news) , Charles Montague, a 55-year-old mover, was browsing the aisles just to kill time. "I don't holiday shop," he said emphatically. "I buy stuff all year long, not during some man-made holiday."

That window shopping has not put a crimp into online sales, however. Online Thanksgiving 2012 sales are already up 16.4 percent over Thanksgiving 2011 for the same period, which measured through 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT), according to IBM (NYSE: IBM - news) .

THE RESULTS MATTER

The stakes are high for U.S. retailers, which can earn more than a third of their annual sales in the holiday season. Investors hope holiday sales will help retail stocks cap a strong year. The Standard & Poor's retail index is up almost 27 percent this year, compared with a 10.6 percent increase for the broader S&P 500 (SNP: ^GSPC - news) .

The National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, forecast a 4.1 percent increase in retail sales during the November (Xetra: A0Z24E - news) -December holiday period this year, down from the 5.6 percent increase seen in 2011.

Consumers heading into the holiday shopping season remain worried about high unemployment and possible tax increases and government spending cuts in 2013. Also, lasting effects of Sandy, the storm that lashed the densely populated East Coast in late October, could cut into how much shoppers can spend on the holidays.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos (Euronext: IPS.NX - news) poll, two-thirds of shoppers said they were planning to spend the same amount as last year or were unsure about spending plans, while 21 percent intend to spend less and 11 percent plan to spend more.

"My family decided not to buy (Chanukah) presents this year - only for the kids. It's too expensive," said graduate student Danielle Slade, 29, from Jericho, Long Island.

Rooflights and Dormers ? Ideal Windows for Loft Conversions

Window choices for your loft conversion are limited. Obviously, you cannot install a double-hung or a bay and bow window in your attic. Also, there are building regulations that you need to observe when installing windows in your loft. Basically, there are only two window types that are most ideal for loft conversions: rooflights and dormers. Of course, you can reinvent and be creative with how you want a window to appear and be installed in your loft. However, rooflights and dormers earn the biggest favour. Read on and find out why.

Rooflights

Rooflights resemble skylights but they?re not totally the same. Rooflight forms are more diverse?from a piece of rectangular glass hatch to a roof-like structure protruding from the roof?s exterior. A skylight is just usually a piece of rectangular glass window.

Rooflights are not just perfect with loft conversions. They can also be installed on flat roof surfaces. Rooflight installation is not restricted much by building codes. However, you may need a professional?s guidance when it comes to choosing among rooflight sizes and glazing options. While rooflights are effective in bringing in light to a loft conversion, they don?t add any more headroom.

Rooflights have different opening styles; two of which are top hung and pivoted. The top hung window opens from its bottom part outward. This opening style creates the illusion of more space in the loft area. Also, most people find this the easiest way of opening a loft window. Meanwhile, pivoted windows are best if there are furniture under the windows. These operate by pulling the opening bar at the top of the window inward. By doing so, the bottom part of the window opens outward.

Dormers

Dormers are like small house-like structures installed on the roof surface of a house. They are vertical windows, usually protruding from the roof?s exterior, which give the loft more headroom. It?s a bit funny to think that they are windows with their own roofs.

Installing a dormer is not complicated. And like with rooflights, building codes regarding dormers don?t restrict too much. However, you need to remember not to install a dormer facing the highway. Do not also install a dormer near the edges or the ridge of your roof. Consider your house?s symmetry when deciding on the specific location on which to install a dormer window.

Dormers can also affect the exterior appearance of your house. You can choose between gable and flat dormer roof depending on which will best fit your house?s architectural style. Check out pictures of houses with dormers to get some ideas on dormer styles and installation. Most of the time, two regular-sized dormers are installed instead of just a large one.

Even if you only are only presented with two window types that work perfectly for loft conversions, do not forget that you can be innovative, modern, daring, and creative with your own style. Believe it or not, you can do a lot of awesome things with just these two window options.

"Life of Pi" and "Rise of Guardians" Debut, but It's Still "Twilight" Time at Box Office

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Ang Lee's lyrical epic "Life of Pi," the computer-animated 3D holiday tale "Rise of the Guardians" and the "Red Dawn" reboot all debut in theaters Wednesday, as the holiday movie season kicks into high gear.

But the current No. 1, "Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2," will almost surely out-earn the newcomers and dominate the Thanksgiving weekend box office, with a second week that analysts are projecting will hit $65 million over the five days. DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians" will wind up with around $55 million and run second, they say.

Add in sturdy holdovers like Sony's record-breaking James Bond movie "Skyfall" and Disney's animated "Wreck-It Ralph," along with expanding awards hopefuls "Lincoln" and "Silver Linings Playbook," and it shapes up as a very busy weekend at the cineplexes.

Summit Entertainment's "Breaking Dawn 2" remains in 4,070 theaters after rolling up $141 million in its U.S. debut last weekend.

That was the year's fourth best opening - behind "The Avengers," "Dark Knight Rises" and "The Hunger Games" - but fell short of the franchise-best $142.8 million set by "New Moon" in 2009. "Breaking Dawn" is expected to play more strongly abroad than domestically, and the first-week numbers reflect that: It took in nearly $200 million in its first week of release overseas.

"In the U.S., it didn't get that finale bump that the last Harry Potter movie did, which was surprising," Exhibitor Relations senior analyst Jeff Bock told TheWrap, "Its fan base was committed, but Summit couldn't expand it beyond that."

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" opened to $169 million in 2011, well ahead of "Deathly Hallows 2," which opened to $125 million the previous year.

"Skyfall," which took in $41 million in its second week as it became the top-grossing Bond film of all time, is looking at a five-day total of around $39 million, the analysts say. Its worldwide gross now stands at $672 million, $507 million of which has come from overseas.

Buoyed by surprisingly strong results, Disney is expanding "Lincoln" into roughly 2,000 theaters, up from 1,775, on Friday. The DreamWorks Oscar contender was a surprise No. 3 finisher with $21 million last weekend, well above analysts' and the studio's projections. It's projected to finish with $24 million over the long weekend.

Among the newcomers, Oscar contender "The Life of Pi" is the most difficult to peg in terms of box-office potential.

It's hard to imagine a tale tougher to bring to the screen than Yann Martel's 2001 saga of an Indian youth lost at sea with a ravenous Bengal tiger aboard his small lifeboat and their ensuing adventures. But Lee brought martial arts ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") and gay cowboys ("Brokeback Mountain") into the movie mainstream, and he's employed the highest-tech digital tools to bring David Magee's adaptation to life in 3D.

Indian Suraj Sharma, who was 17 and had no acting experience when he shot "Pi," plays the lead and spends a good bit of the film alone in a boat with the tiger.

The critics love it (92 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes), calling it gorgeous, innovative and a provocative and soulful examination of faith. Those are admirable qualities in a film, but hardly requisites for - or a guarantee of - box office success.

Fox has the PG-rated "Pi" in 2,700 theaters and it will have the advantage of premium pricing going for it. Analysts see it opening with about $25 million over the five days, and feel its long-term playability will hinge on word-of-mouth and awards buzz.

In terms of the box office, the most comparable film could be last year's Martin Scorsese-directed 3D family adventure "Hugo." Paramount opened that film around the same time last year to $11 million, and it went on to make $73 million, $185 million worldwide.

With its international cast and exotic settings, "Pi" is another example of a film expected to perform far better internationally than in the U.S. Fox is rolling it out in Taiwan Tuesday, China Wednesday and Hong Kong, India and Puerto Rico this weekend. With Lee's following in China and young star Sharma expected to draw crowds in India, those two markets should give it fast start overseas.

"Pi" was produced for $120 million by Lee, Fox 2000 and special effects firm Rhythm and Hues.

Distributor Paramount is rolling out DreamWorks Animation's computer animated family film "Rise of the Guardians" on 3,500 3D screens.

The holiday rollout is a natural for the PG-rated "Rise of the Guardians," which has a star-studded voice cast, and is executive produced by Guillermo Del Toro and produced by Gary Goetzman.

Based on the William Joyce's "Guardians of Childhood" series, it tells the tale of Jack Frost (Chris Pine), who gets help from Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman) after the evil Pitch (Jude Law) threatens the children of the world.

Awareness of the film is strong, and the critics think it's pretty good. Seventy percent of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, 67 percent at Movie Review Intelligence. DreamWorks Animation has been on a hot streak, and this its first release since "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," which has made over $735 million worldwide this year.

"Red Dawn" is a remake of the 1984 John Millius war film that helped launch the careers of young stars Patrick Swayze, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey and Charlie Sheen. Released at the peak of the Cold War, its populist and patriotic themes resonated strongly. In that film, Swayze's character leads a group of teens who turn guerrilla fighters to resist Soviet and Cuban invaders who are occupying their state.

Shot in 2009, the "Red Dawn" reboot was to have been released in 2010, but was delayed by the financial troubles of the studio behind it, MGM.

Since then, the careers of several of the film's stars have taken off. Since shooting "Red Dawn," Chris Hemsworth has starred in "Thor," "The Avengers" and "Snow White and the Huntsman," while Josh Peck was featured in "The Hunger Games." Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas and Jeffrey Dean Morgan co-star.

This "Red Dawn" plays more like an action film and is less jingoistic than the original, and FilmDistrict has marketed that way. In addition to targeting fan boys at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, and college campuses, "Red Dawn" has been show at more than 100 military bases. The cast did a special screening at Port Hueneme Naval Base in Oxnard, Calif.

Speaking of militaries, while the film was on the shelf: the filmmakers digitally turned the invaders from Chinese into North Koreans after angry denunciations of the portrayals from the Beijing press. The switch shouldn't hurt at the Chinese box office, either.

FilmDistrict is opening the PG-13-rated "Red Dawn" in 2,600 theaters. The original made the equivalent of $90 million when adjusted to today's ticket prices, while this reboot will be fortunate to make half that amount. A five-day total of around $15 million is what the analysts are projecting for the opening.

Fox Searchlight is rolling out "Hitchcock," starring Anthony Hopkins as the late director Alfred Hitchcock, in 17 theaters on Friday.

Directed by Sacha Gervasi, with a screenplay from John G. McLaughlin, the film explores the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife and partner Alma Reville (Helen Mirren) while they were working on "Psycho," one of his most successful films.

Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Michael Wincott, and James D'Arcy co-star in the Montecito Picture Company production.

"Hitchcock" premiered at the AFI Film Festival and has been well-received by the critics. It has a 76 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fox Searchlight plans to expand the film gradually over the next three weeks, ahead of its national release on December 14, when it will be on between 500 and 600 theaters.

The Weinstein Company is expanding its Oscar hopeful "Silver Linings Playbook" into 420 theaters. The dark romantic comedy is directed by David O. Russell and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.

"Silver Linings Playbook" averaged $28,652 on 16 screens in its debut and was to have expanded into 2,000 theaters on Wednesday. But the Weinstein Co. shifted gears last week and decided on a more gradual platform release in hopes of building awards buzz. The Weinstein Co. knows Oscar campaigns; they were behind the last two Best Picture winners, "The King's Speech" and "The Artist."

Afghan revolving door: 5 US generals, 5 years

FILE - In this Wednesday, March 9, 2011 file photo, Gen. David Petraeus, then top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, arrives for an interview at the NATO's head quarter in Kabul, Afghanistan. Nearly two dozen generals have commanded troops from the United States and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, since the American invasion in late 2001. (AP) ? For former CIA director David Petraeus, it was a one-year stint as top U.S. commander in Afghanistan. His replacement is scheduled to leave next year after 18 months in the job.

And now the sex scandal that draws them together ? Petraeus' career toppled and Marine Gen. John Allen's possibly on hold ? also has placed greater attention to the quick turnover of American battlefield chiefs in the 11-year war.

Nearly two dozen generals have commanded troops from the United States and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, since the American invasion in late 2001 ? with five U.S. generals running both commands in the past five years alone.

There is no firm evidence the Pentagon's revolving door in Afghanistan has posed any significant obstacles for U.S. troops, but some military analysts suggest the frequent changes at the top create potential breaks in continuity in the critical cooperation with the Afghan political leadership and security officials.

"The learning curve is pretty steep," said retired Lt. Gen. David Barno, who commanded U.S. forces in Afghanistan in 2003 and 2004. "One of the critical coins of the realm in being effective in this kind of environment is relationships among your allies, relationships with the host nation, and with the Afghans."

Iraq also had regular command changes, including Petraeus in charge during the U.S. troop "surge" in 2007 that helped dislodge insurgent control from key areas. But the war strategy in Afghanistan has, at many times, been even more complex as fronts shift and Taliban fighters regain strength.

"Rotating top commanders on an annual basis makes no management sense," Thomas E. Ricks, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, wrote in an opinion piece published recently in The New York Times.

"Imagine trying to run a corporation by swapping the senior executives every year," he continued. "Or imagine if, at the beginning of 1944, six months before D-Day, Gen. George C. Marshall, the Army chief of staff, told Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the supreme allied commander, that it was time to give someone else a chance to lead."

Petraeus, a four-star general, took over the Afghan command in July 2010 to fill a void after Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal was fired because of scathing remarks about America's civilian leadership. McChrystal's predecessor, Gen. David McKiernan, was ousted on May 11, 2009, a year before his term as commander was set to end because newly elected President Barack Obama wanted a new war policy. He had succeeded Gen. Dan McNeill, who served in 2007-08.

Petraeus completed a one-year term and retired to become CIA director in September 2011.

He resigned Nov. 9 after he had an extramarital affair with his biographer. Allen, who also has four stars, is under investigation following revelations that he exchanged thousands of emails with a Florida socialite also involved in the Petraeus case, including a few which were found to be of a questionable nature.

Some analysts and former military officers say that rotating generals so quickly creates a disconnect between the commanders and their Afghan allies, including the mercurial President Hamid Karzai. Commanders also have to deal with billions of dollars in funds and the complexities of handing over security to the Afghans by the end of 2014, including building an army and police of 352,000 almost from scratch.

Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi, a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Defense, said the longer a NATO commander stays in the job, the more chance he has to really understand Afghanistan.

"For us, an Afghan army corps commander should stay in his position for at least three years," he said.

Jawed Kohistani, military analyst in Kabul, said he thinks a constant changeover of senior NATO commanders or Afghan military leaders hampers coordination of the two forces. Staying longer, he believes, allows a commander to know insurgents and their weaknesses.

"It gives an opportunity for the enemy to use this gap ? the time between the leaving of one commander and the arrival of another ? to their advantage," Kohistani said. "There should be enough time for a NATO commander to get to know the Afghan president, vice presidents, security ministers and assess the situation. If he doesn't have enough time to do all these things, it has a negative effect on the security situation."

Obama sped up the confirmation hearing last week for Gen. Joseph Dunford to become the 15th ISAF commander and replace Allen, who was to leave in the spring after 18 months at the helm for a new job as U.S. European Command chief and NATO supreme allied commander. But Allen's confirmation has been postponed until an investigation into his role is concluded.

There have also been about a half-dozen U.S. generals who only commanded American combat troops in the first years of the conflict.

By comparison, the command tours of generals in Iraq "averaged almost twice as long as ISAF's," said Stephen Biddle, a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University.

Given the huge funds involved in the war effort, running the Afghan campaign has been as complicated as managing a multibillion dollar corporation.

Anthony Cordesman, a national security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the lack of continuity includes both the military and civilian presence in Afghanistan, including the State Department and other agencies.

"What the Afghans see is constant change at every level," he said. "They constantly see people come and go. They have no reason to establish lasting relationships. People leave at the point where they're becoming most effective."

He added that "this constant rotation is a problem everybody recognizes, but no one has really been willing to address."

The Pentagon also has a number of senior leaders ? ranging from the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and defense secretary to the commander of U.S. Central Command ? who also play key roles in the war strategy and provide some continuity.

"There is no doubt that the frequent changeover is tough. There is a learning curve each time a new man takes the helm,"

"The good aspect to this is that it brings a fresh set of eyes," said Michael O'Hanlon, a fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington. "It's not realistic to have commanders serve a whole lot longer than, say, Gen. Allen ... as these folks get tired."
